Hey guys of which have you had better results:
Finish or Cascade
I'm using cascade complete now and its awesome the Pacs that is.
I have another problem though, my glasses smell very eggy and "fresh" after the cycle is over so far i have used cascade powder and the tabs help please, my DW is a few months old so thats not the problem. It's a Whirlpool DU85o BOL center Tower DW btw. Thanks Guys

Water heater?

If you've ruled out all dishwasher performance related issues (proper detergent, right amount, proper cycle, correct water temperature at tap nearest machine) I'd check on your water heater. How old is it? If it is old (even moderately old with bad water conditions) I wonder if the anode rod in the water heater has started to break down. I've had several friends with this same problem where it resolved with rod replacement or replacing the whole water heater.

Somewhat same thing here

My hot water heater was going bad.  I had it replaced and everything is fine now.  We've used Cascade Complete for a long time but have changed over to Finish and have been well pleased.

guys its not the water heater, it's less thn 1 yr old. I'm so frustrated. Could it be because of no pre rinsing and heavy dirt/gravy? we use chicken alot and eggs and idont prerinse. Please help :)

Finish and Electrosol are were the only brands of dishwasher detergent I ever used. The one we used growing up, Cascade, ruined our crystal glassware leaving an unremoveable fog on it and we wrote P&G receiving no response. We switched to Electrosol and I use nothing but Finish since they dropped Esols brand name.

Pre-Rinsing

This will ruin your dishes, as the detergent enzymes and chemicals will "attack" the finishing glaze on your cups, plates and bowls. It makes stuff look dull, and gives everything a rainbow appearing haze (you will also notice unremovable "hard water" deposits on them).

I also suggest reading your dishwasher's manual, to see the temperatures on each cycle. It could be that your "regular" cycle is too cold, and the eggy stuff and sauce is causing everything to sour in the machine. Try using a heavier wash, or something that has more water changes (Heavier Cycle, Scrubber Option, Temperature Boost etc.).

You may also wish to check the filters on the machine, as many newer dishwashers no longer have self-cleaning filters like the machines of yesteryear - so there may be gloop building up on them that is contaminating "clean" rinse water, and causing a stink. If you don't want to handle yucky filters, then I suggest purchasing a dishwasher cleaning product or running an empty cycle with your detergent choice (Hottest, Longest, Heaviest) to get rid of any "buildup" inside the machine.

Try flushing your water heater - even in less than a year, you may have accumulated a ton of mineral sludge and other garbage in there. Maybe even bad bacteria, if your water heater is set lower than around 130º, which could also cause the odd smells in your classes.

I don't mean to be rude with this question, but are you sure it is not bad breath that causes the smell. Sometimes, I think my cup is really smelly and horrible (when its clean) and it turns out I am smelling my own breath - lol. If others are complaining about a similar scent, you can probably rule that out.

And as for detergent, I would recommend Finish, perhaps their powders. I pay AU$18 here, and get almost 100 for 1.5kg of powder, whereas tablets that give you 1/4 of the washes cost up to AU$25. You may wish to purchase some STPP (Phosphates) from an online store, to see if that boosts the washing performance if your detergent is Phosphate free. I know for a fact ours isn't, and with soft water, we get great results. Our detergents (for the dishwasher) still have >30% Phosphates, as indicated on the label, so read the labels when you go shopping.

I hope this information is of help to you. Good luck!

I would have other people come in an smell your dishwasher and cleaned dishes right when it's finished and still hot and see what they say.. Also have them smell your hot tap water.

It could be you have egg stuff stuck somewhere in the dw drain or you have a sulfur in your water perhaps. Water with sulfur starts to smell like rotten eggs even moreso after it's been heated in a dishwasher or washing machine.

Both Finish and Cascade give me equal results. Cascade tends to leave a scent to some of the dishes and I don't care for that. Finish, even though some of it is advertised as having scent leaves nothing behind.

In my area every form of Finish(powder, tabs, pacs, gel) is cheaper than Cascade and as I said above I get equal results from both.

Wow ok. Well i live in The Caribbean, Trinidad to be exact. Dishwashers are not common over here although they are becoming more and more popular everyday. The choice of Detergent we have is only Cascade gel, complete and original and cascade complete pacs and the normal cascade rinse aid. Ima have to get some finish when i travel to the US soon.Which is the best Finsih though?

Eggy smell

It will probably be the fact that you have chicken and egg foodstuffs. In my experience, raw egg and raw chicken are possibly the world's worst culprits for offensive smells in the dishwasher.

Advice: I would rinse the bowls before you place them in the machine. If you don't, the smell of Hydrogen Sulphide (rotten eggs) will build up, transferring to other items - especially glassware and crockery.

Also, use a good quality detergent. Beware of Ecover and similar eco-friendly detergents - they can be too gentle. I had experience of hideous smells from using it in one of my mother's previous machines.

Finish Powder

If you can, try to find the Concentrated Finish powder, which runs rings around the older stuff at similar dosings.

And I still wouldn't recommend rinsing anything. Usage of longer, hotter cycles or regular maitenance as stated above should be enough to remove the smell. I would recommend putting anything "smelling" in the dishwasher by itself to see what the real issue is and running the machine, then you will find out what is wrong. If you are really sure you won't blow up your kitchen, try striking a match near running water to test for Hydrogen Sulfide (Rotten Eggs)

Cascade tends to leave a scent to some of the dishes and I don't care for that.

We started to use Cascade Complete pods a month ago or so and really liked the way it performed. We have the standard scent rather than the lemon or orange scented product. When you open the dishwasher door the scent is very strong. But we also have noticed that you can feel like a polymer like feel on the glassware too. Then I started to notice when I pour my cup of coffee in the morning it suds-es up! So I rinsed out the coffee pot before I use it in the morning after it comes out of the dishwasher. No suds after the first rinse. And no more suds in the coffee cup either.

I think the "pod" has too much detergent in it for our needs. So we'll be buying the box of powder next so we can dose it properly ourselves.

I'd been a loyal Cascade use since I got out on muy own fall of 1977. then when the Bosch came along in 2021, had a sample of Finish and was what was recommended by said brand. Far less foaming from the very first load. And with both of my Kenmore Elites, I could hear the foam chocking spray results in sine kiads, Now I wonder if finish would have improved result in the two Elite units I had. Currently still getting through Finish Classic for daily loads and use Quantum Finish for the very heavily soiled loads, wbich are not common.

Been using Cascade for as long as I can ever remember. Always loved the liquid kind liquid. Pods worked great but recently gave up on them due to excessive suds. I just got the powder kind and that's been my new favorite. Unfortunately I hadn't been too impressed with Finish. In fact just a couple weeks ago I got another Quantum pod to try out in my dishwasher without rinse aid this time since I can't use rinse aid anymore, it left my glassware cloudy and I have soft water. Never had that happened before with any Cascade detergent even without Lemi Shine. So as a result I won't be using Finish ever again.

Is nobody gonna mention that this dishwasher being spoken about here is not made anymore? They haven’t made the durawash since like 2012. So I don’t understand what you mean by it being only a few months old? Was it sitting brand new since 2012 and was just installed recently?

Cascade and Finish work equally. The detergent should eliminate odors especially scented detergents it’s always been the case for me as I don’t pre rinse either. The difference is this though. Cascade is much stronger in the fragrance department, and cascade pacs will create sudsing in most water conditions especially softer conditions, and the higher grade of the pac the worse the sudsing is. Even in some hard water they create sudsing. The original pacs, complete pacs, and most especially the platinum and platinum PLUS pacs create sudsing in almost every type of water expect for real hard water typically. Cascade refuses to acknowledge that their products do this and refuse to edit the recipes so that this doesn’t occur. There’s no doubt in my mind that they are aware of this from their testing at their lab. None of the finish products create sudsing. Cascade or any scented detergent pac and gel always leaves a scent in plastics and rubber/plastic lids for tumblers and I use powder only for loads with plastic and rubber contents. The scent from the pacs doesn’t linger on glasses or plates, only materials that absorb scents.

You need to run a good cleaning cycle, especially if this dishwasher has been sitting for years and years and it may of been used a few times years ago I’m not sure exactly on where this dishwasher came from and why it was sitting for so long unused until recently or if this is just a new to you machine, but go ahead get some dishwasher cleaner and run it thru, check the sump drain area and make sure it’s clean before running the cycle and wash down the floor of the interior of any scum if there is any. Again I don’t know if this is a new to you machine or if it sat for years unused and it’s now just being put to use. You can also use two cups of vinegar for the cleaning cycle, pour two cups into a bowl and wait until the main wash begins of a heavy hi temp cycle & dump the vinegar in or just place the bowl in one of the racks. This will deodorize. I have never ever had dishes come out smelling eggy using cascade complete before. Also, some homes with water softeners can have a sulfur eggy smell to the water, and that could be your culprit. I’ve noticed our water at my family’s house smells eggy sometimes.

You have a wonderful dishwasher, those are very good basic machines that clean great and after this cleaning those smells will be gone, that is if it’s not coming from your water. Just make sure you clean your dishwasher by cleaning that drain trap area and washing down the floor of the tub & running cleaning cycles every few months and your whirlpool will always take good care of your dishware.
