First Post and Hoover impeller question.

Hello guys. Writing from Southern Sweden. I've managed to find a almost mint condition Hoover wringer washer. Yeay!

But, the bakelite on the pump impeller was in pieces. Would a Hoovermatic nylon impeller have the same 6 mm diameter axel?

I can't answer your question but WOW, what an absolutely amazing find!! Is this normal, I mean, were these machines commonplace in Sweden? If not, how on earth did this end up there and remain in mint condition?! Have fun with it.

I will join the the congratulations in the condition of this washer, it looks excellent and this machine could be well over 50 years old. I am afraid I cannot answer you question either but I will refer the thread to a friend who may know.

Could you kindly post some more pictures please particularly of the control knob on the side as it appears that this machine may have had a wash timer which is something I have never seen on this washer before.

Hoover exported machines all over mainland Europe as far as possible, I have some internal sales literature at home featuring the earlier 0307 model being sold in Denmark

Thanks guys. As you can see the dial etc is in Swedish. It has a heat coil. Värme=heat. I haven't seen this particular one before, no. But we did have quite a few wringer washers. I hardly dare say this. But I payed $33.84 for it.

The nylon impeller pic is the spare I'm thinking of buying. It's proportions look the same. But I'm unsure about axle size. The seller answered "it's about 7 mms"and mine is 6 mm.

Thank you so much for posting these pictures, you have confirmed what I thought about the wash timer.

I have alerted friends about your posting and I hope they will come in soon with some answers. It may be just as easy to replace the whole pump - this style was used on for thirty years on various machines. There should also be a rubber "tyre" around the pump pully makes the pump turn with the main motor - you will need this too if the pump is to work.

That doesn't look like a Hoover impeller at all, looks more like a Maytag one but I am no expert and am sure that someone will point you in the right direction.

Vacbear, it says run the motor for max 4 minutes, followed by turing off at least 4 minutes before running it again. The gramatics is a bit odd and old fashioned.

I have the whole pump with wheel, rubber etc. It all runs nicely except for that the bakelite is in pieces. Just need to replace the impeller. But of course, if all I can find is a whole pump I'd consider it. The new impeller on the pic is shaped exactly as the one that is broken (if I put the pieces together) and one I've seen taken apart somewhere on YouTube. It's said to fit a Hoovermatic. Could there be national variations? I did see a job lot on alibaba a few weeks ago. But they vanished and I didn't really need 30.

I agrees that washing machine looks in great condition and I've not seen one with a timer fitted either, though it makes sense that hoover could have fitted them, as it's the same combined switch and timer fitted to a hoover twin tub I bought back in the spring of a similar age.

So to the pump impeller, using my calipers it looks to me that the shaft would be a quarter of an inch, as the bearing I've found measures to 6.25mm. That makes sense as back then many parts particularly shafts and bearings were made in imperial measurements.

However, I do have a several of these replacement impellers, as I did manage to buy a bag full some years back, if you'd like me to send one, email me an address to post to and you'll be welcome to have one. Also if you would like, I have a spare hose that fits onto the outlet behind the wringer you'd be welcome to.

So, the post lady rang my doorbell yesterday afternoon. A oblong parcel with goodies from Wales. Thank you Matthew for the spares and the extras you added! Much appreciated! My machine is now in full working order and I did a successful test wash tonight. No more running back and forth to the communal laundry room! Happy days!
