First Time Persil User & Hooked

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support AutomaticWasher.org:

The one pictured is the MegaPearls Universal. It does a fantastic job with whites. It uses Oxygen bleach and it can be used on colors. Persil MegaPearls Color doesnt have any bleaching agents in it. It does a great job as well and it will lock in the color of dark clothes. I use both.
My mom visited Germany last month and brought back a bag of Persil. She said it cost no more than 5 Euros. Here in the States that same bag goes for $17. I bought a huge box of Persil Powder for $46. The stuff isnt cheap but man does it work.

Universal Gold

Which means all four enzymes and a strong oxygen bleach and enzyme/bleach activator for low temp. washing. I'd recommend it not be used on unstable colors, even in cold water. But for serious grease and other stained stuff, wow!

Great that you like it! We're loving our bears and country queens!

Take the Plunge!

I think I will pick up a package at my earlist convenience. I think the local Miele dealership has it. If not, I will order a bag online.

I'm pretty happy with what I'm using right now (Vaska) but I've always been intrigued by Persil. I've heard of Universal (but not "Universal Gold"), Megaperls (with oxygen bleach) and Megaperls Color and like the differentiation of the products. They seem to be frighteningly expensive (approaching $1 / load based on recommended dosing) and it isn't clear exactly which versions are available where. I.e. true German-labeled imports, the ones on persil.com (which are different than above), etc.

Can someone explain which versions come from where, what works best and if there is a place to buy it online at a not-unreasonable price, even if that means importing a case at a time?

All Persil Sold In The United States

Is imported from Germany by Miele USA, and is made by Henkel.

Persil is the "Tide" of the German detergent market, and as with that product, it comes in a vast assortment range.

Basically all versions except those marked "colours" contain oxgyen bleach, bluing agents, and so froth, thus should really only be used on whites, lights and colourfast items. Repeated use will bleach darks or non-colourfast items, even when laundered in cold water. This is because of the famous (or infamous) bleaching action of the product, designed to give equal results when washing in boiling, hot, warm, or cold water.

Persil "colour" versions do not contain bleaches, or OBAs, but do contain more chemicals to keep colours from bleeding and or dye transfer.

Megaperls is nothing more than Persil's super concentrated version of detergent. Supposedly it produces less dust, along with all the other benefits of using a concentrated detergent.

Chlorine Bleach:

NO! One does not add LCB to any wash load with Persil "Universal" or any version containing oxygen bleach. Chlorine and oxygen bleaches cancel each other out, so the benefits are lost from both. Suppose one could use chlorine or oxygen bleach when using Persil for colours, that is if one only wished to stock one variety of detergent for all wash loads.

Methinks MieleUSA tends to import whatever Henkel has lots of stock of laying about. Persil "Gold" Universal has been around in Germany for a good while now, and have seen it elsewhere. There are many more scents and versions of Persil sold in Germany that are not imported by Miele. Only the powders, gels, and Megaperls.

Personally, while find Persil a great detergent, it does nothing special Tide HE or Tide Pro-Line detergent cannot do, especially when oxygen bleach is added. Only have Persil sensitive in my stash because one nabbed a case of the stuff cheaply. Am really upset, as were many others when Henkel decided to add a gagging scent to their formerly scent free sensitive detergent. As with Tide, the scent does linger, even after drying, and sitting in drawers for awhile.

Eddie,

With a few exceptions (loud discussions about that here over the years so anyone in the UK who does use chlorine bleach just ignore this post) European washers (again, those who *know* otherwise just, please, ignore this, let's not do that one again) aren't designed for regular chlorine use.

The bleach in oxygen Megapearls is just as effective and far less wearing on the clothes and their dyes.

So, no, you needn't use chlorine bleach nor should you.

I am out of Germany so can't list the various flavors of German Persil accurately right now, so look at this URL to see the current offerings. The Stiftung Warrentest ratings for from 1.0 (best) on down and this independent consumer testing agency ranks German Persil up with the very best, always, if not always the very best (Gold is at the moment, which is why I sent it to Jim).
I have never used a bad German Persil detergent, ever.

Now, here's the deal: If anyone is interested, write to me at my email address for this site and, when I am back in Germany, I will be happy to let you know what's available and what it would cost to buy and send to you. As German postage/freight rates are based on mass not volume (within limits), a compact detergent would cost considerably less than a classic to ship. I will be back in Germany for the new semester the middle of March. Remember, tho', dosage for TLs is going to make this a very very very extremely totally ridiculously expensive proposition, so I'd only use it in a FL regularly and a TL for the fun of it. Persil and Thumpers (Pank! or other flavor) work brilliantly, no surprise...

We have been using Persil for a few years now and our favourite is the UK version of the Bio Powder and the Non Bio powder. We tried the Persil Sensitive and did not like the smell to it.

Persil is low sudsing and rinses out completely very easily.

Everyone is right, nothing brightens whites like the Bio Powder!

Keven, glad you guys are enjoying the cd and the bears. I definitely want another bag of the Persil, for just washing whites in. The scent of the detergent mixed with the bounce dryer bar is very nice. What were the chocolates you sent me, they were delicious!

Hey Jim,

They are a Christmas specialty, only available from Advent until Christmas. Then we have to live with our stashes for the rest of the year.
I have been told that Walmart carries them in some locations, tho' I have never seen them.

Basically, they are just a very moist gingerbread covered with chocolate and, occasionally, filled with a sweet marmalade or jam or jelly.

Remind me when I get back to Germany that you want more Persil.

The bears are hot!

I will do that Keven. Any chance you can scan the bears for me ;-). How much of the Persil should I use per load, I've been using 1/4 cup?

How much Persil per load?

That's a question I have, too. I just got from Craiglist a 1930 washer and having not had a Miele for several years I can't remember what the right doseage is. I'm using no more than 1/3 cup and wonder if it's too much.
The Miele 1930 and 1520 dryer were "snagged" for $200.00, with the converter box and are only 6 years old! I've built my own stands and am in love again! Greg
