I've started to notice what looks like small rust spots on some of my laundry after washing. Upon inspection, I notice some rust starting to appear around a few of the perforation holes in the tub. I'm thinking that perhaps the rust is being transferred to my clothes during the final spin.

Is POR-15 still the stuff to use? Does anyone know of any issues repainting an entire porcelain tub?

Thanks!

could replace tub with a used one

could just salvage a rust-free tub from a junker and install, swap is usually easy and at least in my experience tub rust pretty rare though when i got my '93 24"DD that one did have a rusty tub-a smashed up dump grab '97 roper 24"provided a replacement tub in good shape along with a rust free centerpost.

I've replaced porcelain DD baskets due to perf rusting on two refurb projects that were 10 years old.  Possibly wasn't necessary but made me feel better about the quality of the refurb.

Better prices can sometimes be found.  One was $97 (NIB) via eBay.  The other was $104 via SearsParts (it's listed at $90 now!).

A few early Maytag-branded models had stainless steel baskets, which can be retrofitted to any unit of the same capacity/physical size.  I thought I had the part number noted but can't find it.

Stainless...

Stainless would look might nice in my old Whirlpool. I might have to do some research.

I've been told that if you use the stainless basket (there was one on eBay not too long ago) that you have to change a couple of the other parts along with as the metal in either the drive block or locknut (maybe both) is not compatible with the stainless of the basket. Just be prepared accordingly.

Also make sure that you are replacing the largest capacity basket, I don't remember the Maytag models in the smaller 2.5 cu. ft size having a stainless version, so this would work as a substitution only if you have the largest capacity model.

Capacity

Gordon,

Mine is the largest capacity. Changing the drive block is not a big deal. Do you mean the "spanner nut" when you mentioned the locknut?

Thanks!

Thank you.

I found a tub on Ebay, but it is for local pickup only. It's an excellent price($60) , so I emailed the seller to ask about possible shipping anyway. I will keep my fingers crossed.

The first 2007 DD Maytag Centennials with stainless tubs were models MTW5800T and MTW5900T. It appears that the part number for the tub is 8579546.

SS Super Capacity Tubs For DD Washers

Use the same basket drive block and lock nut ring as the porcelain tubs do.

If your existing DD washer happens to be a WP branded model with the spiral hole pattern you may be able to get a FREE tub from WP, many of these washers had a lifetime warranty on the tubs, you do not have to be the original owner to get the free tub.

"Use the same basket drive block and lock nut ring as the porcelain tubs do"

No John, the parts schematics call for a different spanner nut in machines equipped with the stainless tub. I have been advised by a Whirlpool employee when we were discussing the subject of these tubs that the metals are incompatible. He and I (you know who I am talking about) have had this conversation more than once.

The spanner nut may look the same, but it isn't. If you pull up a parts schematic on Sears' parts website for the MTW5800 series that Tsteve5 mentions above, you will see that the spanner nut part number was originally # W10116603. That part has since been replaced by W10116602. Sears wants $17.00 for them.

The original spanner nut, part number 21366 which goes back to the near beginning of the belt-drives, still shows as active on porcelain tub BD and DD washers, recent and quite old alike, and sells for half the price.

I'm not lucky enough to have the lifetime tub warranty.

I saw the difference in the spanner nut configuration between the two tubs. The SS looks like it requires a washer up there too, most likely as a barrier between the two types of metal.

SS Super Capacity Tubs For DD Washers

Different basket lock nut for SS and porcelain wash baskets for DD washers, Good to know Gordon, Jason and I have installed three SS baskets in DD washers originally equipped with porcelain tubs using the original basket drive block and lock ring. I guess time will tell if there will be a problem, but if they are using the same basket drive block and a different basket lock ring I dough that the metals are incompatible, but I guess we may find out someday. One of the machines Jason did this on was his KM Suds-Saver DD washer, so I will try to make it a point to check for corrosion in about ten years, LOL.

If anyone wants to install a SS tub in a DD washer originally equipped with a porcelain wash basket it would probably be best to order the SS tub lock ring, but I am betting that it will not make any difference in the long run.
