Wringer Machine

That machine is a Hotpoint Countess it is the smaller sister Machine to the Empress. They were very popular in the UK. I am amazed you have never seen one before Mike has two of them i think !!
All the best Leon,
John.

Hotpoint Countess

Was there ever a brand of wringer washer on sale in the UK, under the name of "Gala"? I saw an old advert on telly several years ago. I think it mentioned that it "...cannot tangle clothes..." (like the Hotpoint jingle).

I can only think that this machine was shipped out by an emigrant in the 1950/1960's, the £10.00 passage people.

Gala wringer

Hotpoint machines were sold under the Gala brand in Ireland during the 1960s - I can only assume that this was for some from of copyright reason - Hotpoint being an American rather UK brand name. An aunt did have a Hotpoint iron-press which must have come from the 1950s.

The AEI Hotpoint machines were sold as AEI Gala - the available models being the Automatic, the FIltermatic (Supermatic), the Empress, the Countess, the 'Wringer-less' Countess and the gravity drain spin dryer. My parents' first washer was a Gala Automatic - they bought it in favour of the Hoover Keymatic - my dad didn't think a frontloader a sound idea from a build point of view - he is an engineer, so such decisions tended to be his - the Gala cost £129 (Irish pounds) in 1968 - their last one (a 9604) cost about £500 (Irish again) in 1989. Various neighbours and relatives had other models from the Gala range.

The Hotpoint name reappeared in the 1970s with the 1504 - possibly when GEC took over AEI

Hotpoint Countess

Hi Leon, a very popular 1950`s machine, came in cream with red trim or white with dark blue trim....did you not have these under the "Gala" name!!! price is a bit steep, looks like its had new rollers though....hows the collection coming on???

From the 1960`s all Hotpoint A.E.I. products as was, where called "Gala" machines when exported to Ireland and all other wordly continents...not sure why, probably tax reasons, same spec machines though...

Heres the Hotpoint trio, Empress, Countess & baby Princess, all use the famous No Tangle Hotpoint Gyrator wash system...

How's the Collection coming on?

Hey Mike,

I know Hotpoint sold wringers here in Oz for a while, but have normally been used to the round tub design.

My collection is getting there...close to finishing my first restoration: a 1976 Wilkins Servis 502 with a stainless steel bowl. Found the machine in a backyard...it was pretty yucky but has cleaned up well...mechanically it just needed new belts, a good grease and it now works fine! Some pics and a video to come.

Cheers
Leon
