For Lawrence(Maytagbear) How to replace your Convertible handle release pedal

OK Lawrence here you go. This is a pretty easy fix and will take you no time at all.
You'll need a flat blade screwdriver, and I recommend you set the cleaner on the floor someplace where you will be able to lean the handle up against the wall while you work.
I mailed you everything you need on Friday, so you should see that package sometime Monday, Tuesday at the latest.

First you'll need to remove the motor hood. There are two screws. The left one is located here:

right side one here

Loosen the screws. Depending on the vintage of your model 70 they may come completely out, on earlier models they stay in their respective holes
Once the screws are loosened, turn the cleaner upright and lift off the motor hood.

Here is the handle release pedal

One screw holds it in place.

Remove the spring first

Grab it, press down, and pull it out from the top. Its not a strong spring...

now press the handle pedal down, and lean the handle back ag

Such as this..

easy

once the screw is removed..

Lift out the pedal. Here are the parts you will have.
1 screw
1 metal pin
1 metal bracket
1 spring
1 release pedal

insert the pin in the new release pedal

as shown, and then put the pedal back into the cleaner base.
Be sure the handle bail pin is in the pedal slide!

next the little bracket

At this point you can raise the handle upright, and then lock it up with the new pedal if you are having trouble getting the bracket in where its supposed to be

screw it down tight

note also the pin from the handle bail and its position inside the slide on the pedal

now the spring

bottom first, and "snap" it in place.

this is what it will look like all re-assembled.

Thank you for the good pictures, and very clear words. Also, thank you for using a Model 70. I found that to be very reassuring. Mine is not nearly as pristine looking.

The swap should maybe take you 30 minutes start to finish, probably much less than that.
I don't believe for a second you're clueless.

I used my model 70 for accuracy, although that's one part of the Convertible that did not change much at all over the years. That pedal and its operation are pretty much the same and interchangable from the very first model 65's to the last of the Decade 800's, and even today's commercial Guardsmans.
You should have no problems.
