...began its career looking like the drawing below. Granny had the 1963 version of this same model (looked almost identical but where this one is blue, hers was gray), and like hers, this machine differs from the base model in that it's missing a rinse temperature selector, and the pedestals:

Thanks Ken

The Blue Controled Panel Washer is the exact one my Mom replaced our 1956 GE. The '56 was a Non Filter Flo. When she got the 1962 or 3 (as the one in your Rendering) she was using Salvo Tablets. She had put them in the FF Pan and they never dissolved. So the clothes for a short time were washed and rinsed with Salvo.
(No wonder I was sctatchy and itchy for a few days ! )

We used Salvo too, because our old usual detergent, Fab, oversudsed the machine. I can still remember the clang sounds as the tablets hit the bottom of the empty tub. We also used something called "Action Bleach" that came in little dissolving cellulose packets ( must have given the Colombian drug cartels a horrible idea). Short lived, I think because if you threw them into the washer with the clothes a portion of the laundry got a damaging dose of concentrated chlorine bleach before it was distributed throughout the tub. It's amazing how all these laundry additives have their own story of evolution. Nowadays there's almost nothing but liquid detergent in the supermarkets. I think 99% of Americans use nothing but that and there's maybe 1% of us nut-cases who use all the other stuff.

I just had this Conversation

With some of the women I work with.

When we had the Laudry at the Hyannis Yacht Club, the Man who did the Chemicals for the Washer said "Nothing Cleans Better than Powders."

I'm inclined to agree 100% with him. My Housemates/Landlord uses Liquid All. I'll rewash her whites with Hot Water and Persil and the Wash Water will turn grey with all the leftover soil that the Liquid won't get out.

I think I do remember the Action Bleach. I use Clorox in the White Wash evry other week. I also boost up cleaning with a little STTP.

Ken...thats my Mothers washer almost to a "T"......one cycle, hot or warm wash, and 2 load levels, thats it!......gray panel......

I almost mis that damn thing.....lol

I also remember ActionBleach......who knew then the future of those little disolving packets.......also mis Salvo tablets....
