Found and bought off C/L: Coppertone 1971 Kenmore 800 dryer...

I found this on Craig's List in Truckee and couldn't resist it. The price was very reasonable and I knew it's history. Winner! Made the drive up the hill and met the seller. I think it was his Mother In Law's. I asked the seller on the odd chance if the matching washer existed. Bummer, He said it died about 4-5 years ago and was replaced with a run of the mill W/P Direct Drive. Even bigger bummer: He remembered that the washer was an exact match to the dryer and he also remembered that it had >two< drain hoses! AARRGGHH! A Sud Saver! That sucks!

The console... A single heat dryer with the P/P pulser motor . I ran it and she tumbles nice and quiet with the heat temp on the money. Some pitting on the chrome but no dings/dents and the paint is in excellent shape.

There is a normal amount of wear on the bulkhead for almost 40 years of usage. The drum light works.

The console light works as well. Starts right up. She also came with the Parts List...

Nice dryer. I actually picked her up as a surprise for a good friend in mind so we'll see if he wants her. (Yeah, 'if...' Funny!) Otherwise, I'll have to find a mate for her. Add that to the list of stag dryers I have like the Maytag 641c and CDE906... sigh...

Andy, that's the matching dryer to the childhood washer JasonL and I both had. I am wondering if these 800 dryers had a "variation" in their seeries. The last one I saw like this had a knits setting. However, it still was a Soft Heat dryer just like this one. Does the electronic sensor still work? The Wrinkle Guard tumbled every 5 minutse for 2.5 hours. That console is almost perfict. I always referred to that color around the dials as some kind of greenish gold.

Personally, and I'm biased, this was the last of the great non-LK washer/dryer pairs before they started taking away all the chrome, silver, lights, and big knobs.

I'd forgotten about this until now, but our washer arrived in February or March of 1971. My mom had a parakeet named Roberta whose cage hung in the breakfast room next to the laundry room. She'd start chirping and singing away when the Kenmore finished draining the tub of water and also while it was spinning. I guess that famous Kenmore pitch just got her to singing. It was kinda funny.

One of my neighbors up the street had the 800 set in Avocado. They got this in 1972; was her first automatic. Previous to this she used a Maytag wringer and a late 50's Kenmore dryer. I believe it had the Roto-Swirl agitator. They replaced them sometime in the mid 80's with another Kenmore set in Almond. I remember she didn't like the Dual-Action agitator in the new machine, and had it replaced with a Super Surgilator. I think she still has this Almond set.

Drum finishes

Are the finishes of these KM/WP dryers baked on or is it just paint? If it is paint do you guys know what kind of paint and can you repaint it?
