Liberal Media? Ridiculous myth.
This is a long-spouted lie by the right to deflect attention from the truth of who controls the major media outlets in this country. This tactic has also covered the fact that the media have largely shirked their responsibilities of being the people's vital and only information source on the neccesary openness and transparency in government, basic civil rights and democratic processes in favor of the almighty profit. Show me the liberally biased media. Show me the so-called liberal main-stream media that is not owned by a major corporation with right-leaning biases and CEOs in the pockets of the RNC. Follow the campaign donations, the money, and you'll find the whole truth.
It wasn't until MSNBC's Keith Olberman and later, during the 08 elections that Rachel Maddow came on with more left-leaning views. The major part of their shows, while entertaining often have little to offer in the way of hard reporting and actual facts than does Fox or any other corporate "news" entity. Other commentators on CNN, and notable others that even attempted to question the previous administration's policies and positions were branded as "defeatists" and un-patriotic and vilified into submission. Long time White House reported Helen Thomas was relegated to the far back of the press room and claimed "they don't like me and want me out of the way because I ask the hard questions."
I am evermore convinced that if we indeed had a free and independent media in this country as the founding fathers saw it should be, there would have been no Iraq invasion, among other things. It's interesting to note that while the rest of the civilized world was screaming, our media placated the Bush criminals and by many are considered to be co-conspirators in the deception of the American public by rolling over on it's back and shaking it's hind leg when commanded to do so by that administration. Even going so far as to making ridiculous claims and building a hatred toward France for no other reason than their government told us our intelligence information on Saddam and Iraq was wrong. Not surprisingly, News Corp & Fox needed no cajoling or intimidation to fall in line with the Bush White House's position, Rupert Murdoch made sure they were already there, ingratiated with the RNC so deeply that it was and is impossible to tell them apart. There may be one minor exception to this generalization of Fox; Shepard Smith who from time to time will jump up and take a contrary position on an issue but most likely for the sake of being a ratings whore. In the end, we know where his bread is buttered (in more ways than one) and could readily discount his rare departure from the party line as little more than showmanship. The current administration has rightly described "Fox Fact Free News" by Anita Dunn saying on CNN:
" The reality of it is that Fox News often operates as either the research arm or the communications arm of the Republican Party. And it’s not ideological. I mean, obviously there are many commentators who are conservative, liberal, centrist, and everybody understands that. What I think is fair to say about Fox is — and certainly the way we view it — is that it really is more of a wing of the Republican Party. [...]
They’re widely viewed as, you know, a part of the Republican Party — take their talking points, put them on the air, take their opposition research, put them on the air, and that’s fine. But let’s not pretend they’re a news network they way CNN is."
If you want to claim a liberal bias in the media, be prepared to back that up with evidence. There are an ever-growing number of sources outside the main-stream corporate world that offer real reporting, honest information and unbiased views (to the degree that is possible by any human being) of our world and our government. You have to hunt for it, news doesn't just get poured into your head from a glowing rectangle in the living room, it takes work. But then, so does democracy and freedom. You gotta want it pretty bad.
