FREE TO GOOD HOME - 1983 KENMORE WASHER #110.82374810, 70 SERIES, Heavy Duty Plus with matching large capacity (top of the line at the time) gas dryer. Washer is Kenmore version of the old Whirlpool belt drive washer. Washing machine belt needs replacing; dryer is working. Gas dryer door flips down, not sideways. Both are almond color. Only one person has used them with very little usage and no other issues, other than belt, for entire time. No sign of wear to tub or drum. No dents or scratches to porcelain exteriors. Am getting a front loader and hate to see my older solidly built machines scrapped. Have tried to give to friends, but all they can see is the age and can't appreciate the quality of these machines. Need both to go ASAP. Located in Santa Cruz, CA.

First off- Welcome to AW.ORG

Second-
I'm sure that you'll get some interest in the machines but a few pictures of them would also help. (An overall pic, and then a couple of pics perhaps under, and of course inside the machines commonly called the money shots.)

Out of curiousity, what machines are you replacing the machines with?

ANSWER

Hi, I figured that about the pictures. Will try to get them posted by late 1-19-15. Thanks for the push. I got started looking for a new washer because I thought it would be expensive to replace the belt on my Kenmore, and I'd had the washer since 1983. In the process, I discovered that almost all new washers are poorly made. Before I found out a belt is relatively inexpensive to replace, I got sold on a Speed Queen AFN50RS front loader solidly built in the good old USA. The area where I live has water restrictions and front loaders use less water. They're making changes to the Speed Queens coming out in 2015, and I wanted to stay with the model made in 2014. Plus, a front loader would be easier for me to use, now that I've gotten on in years. So, I used these 'excuses' to go ahead and purchase the Speed Queen front loader. I was going to keep my Kenmore dryer, but then realized that because the door flips down and forward, it would uncomfortably hem me in when transferring clothes from the front load washer to the dryer. And guess what, the Speed Queen dryer solves that issue by having the door open to the side. Dang...now I'm stuck with two new appliances, but need to find a new home for my old buddies.

Getting ready to say goodbye

Off to the recycle center for the pair, this coming Friday 1/23/15. That's when my new washer/dryer are being delivered. The delivery people will then take the old appliances to the recycle center where they'll be scrapped. They don't bother with finding them a new home.

PICTURES ADDED

Okay, okay...I've added the pictures. When I took the photos, I noticed a few small scratches on the top front edge of the dryer of which I took a close shot. Don't know how they got there as I have always been careful not to drag something across the top of the appliances that could scratch them. Also, stupid me, I had put a roll of duck tape on the top of the control panel of the washer, and when it was removed, it took some of the wood-look pattern with it. I've included a close-up shot of this as well.

Answer

I know and don't know what else to do. Places I've called don't seem interested because of the age and broken belt.

Thank you!!

Just wanted to say thank you. I will be on the look out to see if he responds. The delivery people are coming out between 2 pm and 3 pm tomorrow, Friday 1/23/15 and will be taking these with them when they leave.

Thanks for getting back to me, so I don't sit around wondering. I'm not ready to give up yet, though. I placed some more calls to appliance repair shops and may have some luck there.

STILL AROUND

I couldn't see these going to the recycle yard, so still have them if anyone's interested. Their old post has now been occupied by the Speed Queen duo. The Kenmore's are still in the garage, but have been assigned a new location where they don't have to look directly at their replacements.

they look like a nice pair.....

i'm surprised they haven't been taken yet. and they are free!!!???

and those scratches on the dryer that you mentioned was nothing. or at least to me they didn't seem like much. and i couldn't see where the duct tape peeled off some of the "wood grain" looking paneling on the top of the control panel??
and even though, they still look like a really nice set!!

i hope someone saves them and gets good use out of them....

:o)

ADDED Picture

Thanks, I didn't realize that I hadn't included the shot showing the top of the panel where the duct tape removed the print. I've added it now.

If I were near Id take them but Im clear across the U.S. Glad to see you thought enough of them to not let them go for scrap. Hope someone takes you up on the offer. Once they're gone they're gone forever.
