You never know what you will find while driving.
Just 10 min ago, I was driving to the bank and stopped DEAD in my tracks...On this machine was a cardboard sign saying "FREE...IT WORKS".

Somehow I managed to haul this by myself into the front seat of my Grand Am.

What a surprise!

Nice catch,

Gary!

I just don't understand people who discard perfectly running appliances on the base of fashion.

Now please tell me....

Date of manufacture?

What model exactly is this one?

Can I download the manual from the KA website?

I have questions, I know my AW washer friends have answers:-)

That screen on the bottom looks very close to the one i have in my WP. Was WP using the powerclean system on these KA machines at that time?

BTW...very nice d/w...and yes Maytagbear,...more money then sense..all too often.

Gary, that looks like the exact machine that's in my kitchen right now, including the black front panel. Interesting that it has an adjustable top rack as mine doesn't, but otherwise it looks the same.

I bought my machine when I remodeled my kitchen 16 years ago so that should give you a ballpark idea of when it was manufactured. Mine is still going strong and I suspect the one you found was a victim of a remodel where all appliances were replaced whether they were working or not. This is pretty typical behavior, and if you're going for a new look, it's a case of out with the old regardless of condition. It's just too bad that there aren't more places like "Urban Ore" in Berkeley, which is like a humane society for building materials, appliances, and home furnishings and finds new homes for machines like the one Gary found.

Gary - that is the very last model year run before they switched to the Tall Tub design. I have the same machine, except it's the Superba. It's vintage is about 1995 or so. I do believe that is the Whirlpool Power Clean module in there. It's an excellent cleaner, and not too hard on the ears! Certainly easy on the eyes. All of the manuals are available under the Customer Service link of the KitchenAid site. I got mine there. Those racks look to be in mint conditon...what a great find!! Congratulations man!

You'll probably find it works as well as the Superba you currently have!!

Wow! Guess I stumbled across a bargain today!

I hooked it up to the electricity(make-shift) and hooked the drain line. Filled it up with a garden hose. It washed perfectly, the timer advanced and it drained out absolutely no problem.

Heated Question....

My present KA Superba(KUDS220T4) stops at the beginning of the cycle prior to the first prewash to heat the water to the proper temperature.
On my 'find' machine, I think I read in the manual that it actually continues to wash until the proper temperature is reached, then, the timer advances. Is that correct?

Also in my present Superba, the heating element is in the sump area. In my find, the element is exposed.

Now for the dry question:

In my present Superba, the heated drying portion actually has a fan that blows heated air around. I believe there is a heating device in the actual fan housing.

While playing with my Free find a bit ago, I advanced it to the drying portion and the exposed heating element started to get HOT. Am I correct in assuming that the way this machine dries is to get the heat from the exposed element and the fan simply blows the heated air around in the tub to dry the dishes? The fan assembly seems to be plastic, and I believe the fan in my Superba is housed in metal.

Wow, very damn nice!

If it's true about recirculation continuing while the water heats, that's a much better process than a static heat.

I've wondered if later models with the exposed heating element dry as you described, using the element as the heat source and blowing air over it inside the tub.

Good racks are a big plus, those babies are expensive.

Gary -

In your find, the water does continue to recirculate while the machine heats. It does this because the heating element is exposed, as you mentioned, but also because the heating element in the Superba is about double the wattage. The Superba does have a heater integrated into the drying unit, while on your find, the blower unit does not contain an integrated heating unit. You'll probably find the cycle times to be longer on your find because water takes longer to heat, depending on the setting of your water heater. Not sure if it's the exact same wash system in both machines or not, but they are at least close. I'll bet you'll notice no real difference in cleaning ability.

So, you gonna keep her?? Were you able to find the literature you wanted on the KitchenAid site?

So, you gonna keep her??

I think so....unless I get an offer(TeeHee!).

I found the literature on the KA website.....Thanks for the information.

I am presently scanning in some information on the Sure Temp water heating as well as cycles and times and will post to the site for inquiring minds.

This new KA will join my Superba as well as my GE2800. Perhaps I will have to have a 'dish' wash-in.

And coming soon will be my latest washer addition...A true Dependable Care Maytag.
