Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

these standard tub orbital washers are really good performer

They're pretty decent. I was after a DE713 dryer listed in Berkley and the seller wouldn't let me have it without taking the A213 washer. Very oddly pieced set. I knew a family that was spending a fortune at the laundromat and needed a set so I went through the washer, rebuilt my 1981 Kenmore dryer and gave it to them. I ran the washer for 2 weeks as a daily driver to put it through its paces. It had decent performance and being an early design had the turquoise agitator with lint filter. They have (or had) 2 cats so the filter gets used. It was the only Maytag washer I came across where the pump pulley had more belt dust on it than the transmission pulley. Pump was nearly locked up and drowning it with oil unsuccessfully healed it. Tub bearing was noisy so I installed a new stem and boot seal kit along with a tub bearing. Grabbed and installed one of my many spare pumps, installed new belts, new carriage rollers and springs, lubed the damper pads and sent it off. It's still chugging along 8 years later which is about the average life of a new washer with at least one repair.

The short tub Maytags seem to be the best performers. I once had a Maytag A209 I bought for $50 back in August of 2015, unfortunately after 3 months of owning it the motor decided to give up the ghost, in a exchange I ended up getting my A810 set since I waited very patiently for about 8 months and definitely was worth it. Definitely miss that washer since it worked very well but only was a 1 speed machine, def want to try to find a Maytag A206 with 306 dryer in the future once I get the space.

You can get the same performance in the extra large tubs by selecting "Large" water level which is around the 16 gallon mark of the smaller tub machines. If I have something that's has a bunch of hard to shift stains, I'll do this or just underload the washer regardless of the water level. If heavily soiled with dirt, I'll select the pre-wash cycle which fills, washes for 4 minutes, drains, refills, agitates for a minute, soaks, and goes into a 10 minute wash cycle. Love 806's for this feature. The 10+ series machines will not drain and refill between the the pre wash and main wash cycles.
