I barely remember Fresh Start from the 1980s. I think I was 8 at the time. I just remember the cool plastic bottle that had blue powder detergent inside. I've noticed some folks seem to like it in their videos. Anyone have experience with it? What's the scent? Performance? Seems it can only be had online. I think Colgate-Palmolive makes it, but their website doesn't mention it. Thoughts? The link was the best price I could find on it (free shipping).

I've actually seen that at Winco Grocery stores. If there's one around you, you should check it out. I personally have never used it, but may try it sometime soon.
 
FreshStart ---

---used to be my absolute favorite detergent.It was low sudsing,had a real fresh aroma and did great getting my wash real clean.The rinses were crystal clear and I bought it by the 100 pound cylinder directly from CP.Now,it has the same bottle but,like P&G,CP couldn't leave well enough alone and changed its formula.When it was my favorite detergent,I used it in my Jet-Action 1-18,my Magic Chef(made by Philco of Italy)24" front loader and my 1955 Westinghouse Laundromat washer.
 
Try Harris Teeter - you should be close enough to NC/SC to shop at one. If not, wait till your next trip to Nashville and pick some up from them then. Still a good detergent with a fresh clean scent. Works well too.
 
I bought three bottles over the past few months. I really like, low suds even in the front loader. There is not much of scent after the clothes are dried. Seems to do a decent job of cleaning. It sells for $4.00 a bottle at my local Hy-Vee grocery store.
 
It was one of the first concentrated detergents. Maybe "the" first one. Instead of a half cup or more of Tide or what have you, Fresh Start needed only one capful, plus the clear plastic bottle told you when it was time to buy more. Because only a capful was needed (similar to using Persil or Ariel today), the bottle seemed to last forever. I also liked not having to bring along a measuring cup or scoop, because the Fresh Start cap WAS the measuring device.

When I used it in the 1980s, I was still an apartment dweller and had to lug my laundry in baskets to a laundry room (with Maytag TL coin machines) in the apt complex. At least I didn't have to get in the car and go to a laundromat. It was convenient having a sealed bottle that didn't weigh a lot or take up lots of space, versus a huge box of normal powder detergent perched on top of the clothes in the basket, ready to tip over and spill.

It cleaned nicely in commercial TLs, and it smelled nice as well. Haven't seen it in years. When Costco stopped carrying it, I stopped using it.
 
Harris Teeter does indeed have FreshStart in most of its stores. Not all, but most. $4.99 on Vic card special.

I like it for all the same reasons mentioned here, but also for one odd reason. I am very fussy about what I put on top of my appliances. To protect my dryer top, I put a towel under detergent bottles or cartons. Powdered detergent is my preference right now, but the drawback being that boxes drop a lot of abrasive granules. The FreshStart bottle fixes all that. I LOVE the lack of suds in it as well.

Thanks for the Harris Teeter tip...not any in East Tennessee, but a buddy of mine is traveling in Nashville...I'll have some by Friday when he returns. :) Hope it still has a great scent. I noticed the bottle is no longer clear or squared off though. :(
 
Speaking of old school detergents...

Whatever happened to Dynamo? It was available at Walmart up until a few years ago, but even then it didn't smell like it use to in the 1980s...was always a great scent. Neither does Wisk. Most all smell very similar now, nothing distinctive. I guess it's like pickles; companies takeover other companies and use the cheaper of the two formulas. So long Cates Pickles of Faison, NC and the awesome Paramount Pickles of Louisville, KY. I digress. :)
 
In the link that Dan provided, it states that this version of Fresh Start is manufactured by Phoenix Brands. I guess this would be the norm, as they're now making other Colgate-Palmolive brands (Ajax, Fab, Dynamo).
 
Oxydol

I found "Oxydol" liquid "Fresh Scent" at the Dollar Tree tonight. Smells like classic Wisk a little to me. Wow, great I thought...then I see a "Smells Sooo Good" version and it smells more like Tide/others...I can't put my finger on it, just more chemical smelling or something. :( Seems the version I liked is discontinued. Figures.

Seems Oxydol is made by CR Brands--which was started by former P&G employees.

East Tennessee...I found some in Nash--get it tomorrow--can get it in Asheville, NC as well (just over the mountain).
 
Fresh Start is

very readily available here in Tacoma,WA. Several stores carry it. I have always really liked it. Good performance, soft scent, and usually on sale around here.
 
Harris Teeter in Nashville (Brentwood area) carries Fresh Start - it was on sale with a VIC card for $4.99 - thought that was a little high. Comes in 33 load version only. I would imagine other Harris Teeter's carry it around the country--I called the store and they were very happy to check stock for me.
