I'm getting a Philco V-handle painted. I was wondering which parts of the interior you can paint. I've seen beautiful pictures of everything from the plastic to the gaskets painted. Does the paint adhere to plastic well enough? Are there certain paints that are too harsh on the plastic - either on the door or inside the fridge? I assume you can paint the metal parts, right?

Whoah !!!!!

This is a big job but it can be done. This unit has to be totally dismantled and all the interior parts washed/disinfected and primered. That's the key, proper preparation so the paint adheres properly. I would use a paint that's made to cover metal, just for the durability. Before you primer, take one of interior parts and get the color matched. I had a pink kick plate color matched at Home Depot. They put it up to their scope and printed out the formula and mixed it with a paint for metal. I then had it sprayed at a local auto shop and it turned out great. If there are any cracks on your interior parts you can use a fiberglass repair kit and some sanding. Good luck with your project and keep us updated !!!!

Fridge interior painting..

The interior of the cabinet liner is probably porcelain enamel, which is very difficult or impossible to get paint to adhere to. That part will likely need to be touched up in the chipped areas, but not otherwise overall painted.

The plastic trim can be painted, but as said previously, the parts will need to be taken off, cleaned and sanded to remove gloss, and then painted with an appropriate paint.

The reason I decided to respond here is due to an unexpected issue on a project last year.  I restored a 1926 Frigidaire, which had a factory painted cabinet, inside and out. There was no porcelain, only paint.

I had the cabinet professionally painted with a two-part acrylic automotive paint. The results were very good, but there has been an unexpected problem.  The interior of the cabinet still smells like paint. The smell gets on the bottles and cans stored in the fridge, and then I can smell / taste paint when I drink from them.  So you may want to be sure to use a low odor paint for anything interior.

Sincerely,

David
