Fridgidare Dryer

This is my latest acquisition. I got the pair for $50.00. They were filthy and the only story was they were taken from a rental property. They had been stored in a garage for awhile. I figured the washer would be the trouble spot, but for the price I wasn't out much if it couldn't be fixed.. I brought them home, hooked up the washer and it ran smooth as silk! Wiped it down and it looks almost new, shiny tub and all. The dryer on the other hand is the bane of my existence. I've replaced the felt seals, the rollers, the idler pulley, the heater, the thermostat and the lint screen (parts more than purchase price)and it still runs, what I would call ruff. I have checked everything, and even danced around it naked to appease the Fridgidare dryer gods but no luck, it is still louder than I would like. It also has a cheap, tinny feel, not quality at all. combo warned me and he was right. The only good things to say so far 1)the automatic cycle is good, everything dry without over drying 2)sheets and blankets don't ball up. The gods must not have been impressed because when I got the dryer cleaned up I realized it is not an exact match to the washer.

Congrats! The dryer is a little bit older than the washer. What a great Frigidaire set for fifty bucks! Hope you have many years of enjoyment from them.

after surgery in 1995, my brother built me a base like that for my dryer, granted not as tall, and way before pedestals ever were thought of....as I wasn't able to twist and bend at the same time to unload.....

probably the best invention ever for dryers....

dont know why this was never thought of earlier....

I do like that pedestal..... A LOT.

Height works wonders. The bathroom sink needed to be replaced. Landlord let me pay separately to have the installer mount it higher. 42" Yee Ha!!!

Grandpa fashioned a homemade pedestal for it (shorter than JEB/Jeff's) when they got the WP Supreme dryer in the late 1960s.

Frigidaire 1-18 W&D

Hi Jeffery, Some time you should see and hear my 1-18 washer, Jason and I insulated it to the point it is almost silent.

 

It might be time to do the same with a FD 1-18 dryer, although I have never been that motivated, LOL unlike a lot of the appliance collector guys I don't have to have matched sets and WP built so many great dryers in your great state.

 

Jeff, I recently got a Westinghouse pre WW2 Westinghouse Empress Ironer that is in great shape including the owners Manuel , I bought it in a weak moment and it needs another home as I already have more Ironers than I need, are you possibility interested ?

That's a close-enough match to the washer, most wouldn't ever notice.  They'll be staring at the pink Westies anyway - wow!

<span style="font-size: 12pt;">In the Maytag laundry design guide, about 67-ish, they elevated the H-O-H dryer on a pedestal.  Never tried one until I bought the Duets around 2003 or so.  Westinghouse made the "Taller"washer and dryer in the mid 60's?</span>

I worked in a hardware store the summer of '78, and they were a dealer of both Frigidaire and Maytag.  Only the store manager was allowed to sell any appliances, so I didn't get any experience doing so. When a customer came in wanting to see washers and dryers, he took them over to look at the Maytags unless they specifically said they wanted Frigidaire.  He didn't care much for the Frigidaire washers, but he despised their dryers. On more than one occasion I heard him tell the customer they were junk. I never had one, so I can't personally say, but think Maytag was the better choice.

Yogi, it was thought of before

One of the Westinghouse engineers in the neighborhood, his wife had the WH top loader and the "Higher Dryer", which is like today's front load pedestals. If this did not exist, then I must have a very vivid imagination.

There are some products I kind of remember but am not sure of. For example, was there a Beatles hairspray? Did it actually exist or just a figment of my imagination?

Thanks everybody. When my grandmother got her first Westinghouse slant front set in 1948 they remodeled a small room next to the kitchen and because she was a tall woman had my grandfather build them up on a platform and covered it with the same linoleum as the floor. My mother, also tall, had my dad build hers up when they bought the house I grew up in. I am also tall and like the platform but its hard to move washers up and down a platform and I change them occasionally so I just have the main dryer on a platform for loading an unloading clothes. It acts as a house for the litter box(note the hole in the door). I bought a couple of cabinet doors to close it off and plan on painting them white (well that was the plan 5 years ago when I made it) but they have a nice finish and I haven't gotten around to sanding and painting.
John, I might be interested in the ironer-They have started an industrial museum in town and want anything produced by local industries. It has the backing of the big wigs in town and will be huge.
Pulltostart,I have had some misgivings about the naked dance to appease the dryer gods. I have seen me naked and dancing is not my strong suit so it may have been detrimental to my plea to the gods.
