Frig has water under containers on top glass shelf.

I dont understand if the water if from condensation or what but most anything put on the top grig glass shelf will make a puddle, very weird. Anyone know what to do. The frig is a Kenmore, might that be the problem?;) Its about 15 years old and top freezer type with ice maker but its off and was never hooked it up. doesnt look like theres water dripping just forming under or around jars and other containers...HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just a stab here. If there is no water leaking from above or around the shelf and the items are wet, possibly the items are getting warm at a high rate and they are sweating. Just like a glass with water and ice in the summer on the table. They sweat and leave a ring. Possibly the defrost heaters are causing this, or maybe the circulating fan is not running correctly after a defrost cycle. Possible that the thermostat is having too wide of a swing before it comes back on. Just a shot in the dark. Hope someone else chimes in for you.

Bill,

Are you sure the defrost heater for the freezer coil is working and that the drain opening below it is clear?  If there's a glacier forming instead, then the water in the fridge section could be coming from the freezer.

Sometimes a small item can block the condensate drain below the coil.  I had an experience where a rouge frozen pea was sitting at the top of the drain and caused water to back up and re-freeze, accumulating more with each defrost cycle.

If you can advance the defrost timer and trigger the defrost cycle (best done when you have an idea that there will be a normal amount of frost accumulation on the coil), check the pan under the fridge to see if defrost water is trickling down into it.  If not, your problem is likely the heater or an obstructed drain.

Thanks Ralph, didnt have time today but we believe the water came from above like you say. I put a paper towel in that area. I noticed when i opened the freezer there was a small chain that fell from an item on top of the frig and even though it was no more than 1/8 inch it hung in front of the door seal, no idea if that was the problem? I'll have to investigate as i've never worked on this frig.

Water In The Fresh Food Section

Hi Bill, you have a blocked freezer defrost drain, this causes the defrost water to leak out the air vents in the ceiling of the ref section instead of draining into the defrost drain system and ending up in the pan under the refrigerator.

This is a very common problem with refrigerators and is easy to fix.
