The time is coming when I will need to replace the belt on my Frigidaire 1-18. It is staring to shred off tiny pieces into the "bowl" below the mechanism. I can't imagine the rollers like getting that crap slung in them so I want to replace it before it breaks or causes other issues.

Could somone tell me what size I would need? I'm trying to avoid driving all over town trying to find a place that may have the right size.

I'm planning to clean the rollers after I install the new belt. I have never done this before and would appreciate advice in this area as well. I'm assuming denatured alcohol would work fine. I've heard lighter fluid mentioned too.

Thanks Guys,

Joe

Proper tightening

Can you tension the belt too much?

I did that once and ruined a water pump job.

The manual says "1/2" play, but when adjusting it that way it seemed to have a lot more tension. I'm concerned that this will overstress the motor bearings and cause wear.

Anyone every overtighten a belt and wear out a motor or transmission pulley?

Re:

Thought I'd let you guys know that I located the belt over the weekend. I got the belt size from the appliancerepair.com website. It is a 3/8" x 31". I bought a new belt at Ace Hardware for $5. When I get around to putting it on I'm going to do a picture thread for everyone that demonstrates the procedure.
