Frigidaire Advice...

For those of you who know the GM/Frigidaire line well I would be interested in your opinions on which of the various models (Unimatic thru 1-18) would clean clothes most effectively, and leave them the most dry. (considering the various spin speeds) Thanks for sharing your opinions.

Clean vs. dry

I've never had a problem with cleaning ability from a Frigidaire, and I loved (and miss) my 1-18.

However, for spinning ability, that's a slam-dunk; the Unimatic smokes them all with its 1140 RPM spin. I remember Roger and Ross unloading their Unimatics, and seeing dry spots on the clothing that came out.

The second-closest would be the Rapidry 1000 units. The 1-18 was okay at spinning, but not an all-star performer. (Great spray-rinser, though, since it would turn on that Jet-Circle and just leave it on until the rinse fill completed ;-) )

I had obtained many different models from different eras from 1954 to 1977.Some were too far gone but most had minor problems i.e.water inlet valves,broken agitators,pumps and timers.I used them faithfully and my favorite was the unimatics.They were built like tanks and worked so well.I also liked the Rollermatic solid tub units but their turn over far from matced he uni's.The 1-18's were great for sand disposal,capacity,Jet Circle Spray System and delicate speeds but there were times I had the same problems as I've had with the direct drive Whirlpool made machines where they'd tear some dress shirts and wear out my bath towels.My uni's may have tangled the loads and use a bit more water than need be but they were deffinately my favorite of all the top loading washers ever made!!My second favorite?Kelvin ate her! LOL

For your comments. I'm still interested in hearing other Frigidaire owners weigh in. I'll soon be obtaining obtaining my own Frigidaire and I think I will be able to choose from a Unimatic or 1-18. I grew up with a solid tub rollermatic and I will be happy to have a "Real" Frigidaire again... All comments are appreciated

I've had Unimatics, Multimatics, Pulsamatics, Roller-Matics and 1/18's come and go in my collection, but by far the best is the Unimatic in my opinion. Clothes are clean, properly rinsed and totally spun dry and it only uses about 27-28 gallons of water. To top it all the Unimatics put on the best show as they are the most dramatic of all the Frigidaire washers (again IMO) and of course that is what is most important in rating a washer.

I did not keep any of the Multimatics, Rollermatics or 1/18 and passed those on to other collectors. I have five Unimatics hooked up and running in the collection (1947, 1952, 1955, 1957 and 1958) which I use all the time. By far the 1958 WCI-58 is my workhorse washer and gets used more than any other washer in my collection. I also have two Pulsamatics (1955 and 1957) hooked up and running because they are such fun washers as well.

I will soon be getting my own Frigidaire and I couldn't be more excited. Today I talked with Mark (Lightedcontrols) about coming up to his warehouse of washers, it's about 2 hours away from me so it's an easy trip. Looks like I'll probably wind up with a 1-18 or Rollermatic. He's got a Unimatic but says the tranny has water in it, and it feels to me like more of a job that I am capable of taking on... So I'll be going up the last day of February and bring home a surprise. Thank you guys for weighing in with your comments I have enjoyed reading them.
