I bought a semi-vintage Frigidaire Electri-Clean stove to replace the piece-of-crap Kenmore that just about burned my house down. The nameplate lacks "GM," so I suspect it dates to post-1979 when White Consolidated Industries took over. So far, it has been a great performer. Can anyone tell me when it was made? Thank you.

Model: RE36HL*0
Serial: 00CC 7016

The easiest way to tell if it is a GM or WCI model is the elements (unless its a ceramatop) . A GM Frigidaire will have the Radiantube thick elements hinged and a triangular support to keep the elements level.Any other brands have a much thinner set of burner elements and are usually the pop in,pop out plugged type.

Xraytech, please share your story, too.

When I bought this house, it had a Kenmore drop in gas range with a self-cleaning oven. It had a big rectangular vent that came up in the center back of the cooktop. When I was removing it, I could see that there must have been some scary moments, possibly when the oven was cleaned, because there was charred, not just scorched, but charred wood to the point where some of it was missing where the oven vent touched the wood behind it. The only time I turned it on was to light one burner to show the couple who came to buy it that it worked. I used my 1954 40" range plugged into the dryer outlet in the basement for meal preparation.

Well, our Kenmore range is a MOL smooth top that I bought in early 2007. About 2 weeks ago I had placed my Tupperware on the stove to pack my lunch and I had noticed that the from right burner was very hot, when I looked the burner was indeed turned off and I hadn't used the stove in over 24 hours. I immediately unplugged it.
I cant say that I'm sad to see this stove go as from the beginning I didn't care for this stove and regretted not shelling out $50 more for a GE.

I am now cooking with a Westinghouse Roaster and my array of Westinghouse Immerse-a-matic appliances, as I am purchasing a Bisque GE smooth top from a friend as soon as her kitchen re-do is complete and her new GE slate appliances arrive

Fire hazard

I purchased my Kenmore coil burner stove the last day of 2006 and had it delivered in early January 2007. It worked fine until just after Thanksgiving of 2009 when the oven element burned out. A replacement element was ordered from Sears. It arrived damaged, so I had to wait another two weeks for a replacement. This one finally arrived undamaged, and I installed it without a problem. Fast forward a year later. I set the oven's self-clean cycle for moderate soil--about three hours. Toward the end of the cycle I returned to the stove to check on the cleaning progress. I had to use a flashlight to shine through the oven window since the oven light would not work during a clean cycle. To my dismay, the oven element had gotten so hot that it melted through the porcelain and into the steel on the floor of the oven. I shut the power off and stopped using the oven.

A lengthy complaint was addressed to Sears. Since the stove was out of warranty, Sears would not replace it. I was offered a measly $75 gift card for my troubles. Thus, my view of any modern appliance manufactured by Electrolux/Frigidaire is extremely negative. The company should be ashamed of the garbage it churns out.

To echo that...a co-worker of mine just had her kitchen redone with higher end electrolux appliances. Recently, she self cleaned one of the double ovens for the first time which destroyed (from what she described as) the thermistor for that oven. When the repairman came out and replaced it (it was still under warranty) he basically advised her to NOT use the self cleaning feature as this is a common issue. Needless to say, she is pretty steamed about having a new self-cleaning oven that she can't self clean because it will SELF-DESTRUCT!

With the exception of the color (avocado), she badly wants her 1975 GE over/under Americana with the P-7 over back!
