It was kinda strange that there wasn't no COLD wash, there was only HOT & WARM washes and WARM & COLD rinses, but no COLD wash?
Hmmmm.....

Cold Water For Washing

Is a very new fangled idea! *LOL*

It wouldn't work with soap and only "light duty" detergents for fine washables were acceptable to most for cold water washing. Everything else got hot or warm water.

By the 1970's with the whole Arab oil embargo and resulting energy crisis you began to see a push for using cold water to do laundry. Cold Power and host of other detergents came out, but most housewives wouldn't go near. People just thought there was something slovenly about washing laundry in cold water.

Warm rinses were a holdover from when soap dominated laundry day. That and in some areas of the country during winter months cold water is just that, so some liked to use warm instead. It took years to get the idea across that cold water was just as good as warm for rinsing. Again during the energy crisis that was another idea that got pushed along.

IIRC many powdered detergents did not dissolve well in cold water back then. Can remember reading packages and or Consumer Reports where it was advised to first allow the machine to fill with hot water to "low", add powdered detergent, then let machine agitate for a bit, then switch to "cold" and get on with the rest of the washing.

Strangely, they switched from having no "WARM-WARM" setting on the WCDS Custom Deluxe model in 1971 to having no "COLD-COLD" setting on the equivalent WCDT Custom Deluxe model in 1972. In the mid-late seventies, they went back to having a "COLD-COLD" setting again instead of "WARM-WARM", The 1972 model did add a "Permanent Press" cycle however.

I'm still wondering why they didn't use a 5 position temp selector or separate wash and rinse temp selectors on this popular Custom Deluxe model. I understand they wanted to keep more features for the more expensive models but...
