In Australia and Great Britian Sunbeam models ran about 10 years behind those in the US. Their Model 24 is really our model 12.

Borrowed Escutcheon

The handle is more angular and the front has been squared off with the Vista front escutcheon or shield set in the metal surround.

English Bread

In England all consumer magazines rate Sunbeams of the 50's with dough hooks. It wasn't heard of here until 1976. Here is an English set.

If it Ain't Broke Don't Fix It

Why in the world did Sunbeam wait so long to introduce dough hooks here. And why in the world didn't they simply use these simply, sturdy and very effective dough hooks of the 50's. Sheesh!

Keep Your Options Open

The blender attachment was sold in Australia through the 70s and sported an unbreakable jug with a nifty handle.

Boy Was He Juiced

The juicer attachment is lightweight, unbreakable resin based, much nicer and easier to store than glass.

Strainer

The plastic strainer fits into the spout opening and has larger holes so fruit and some pulp passes through. Sadly at today's prices a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice costs about $4.00 to make.[this post was last edited: 9/28/2010-00:16]

Joy Unbridled

A car full of junk from a day of second handing is twenty times more fun to me than an expensive dinner or play. I met three lovely people in the process of getting this mixer from Australia and then sourcing parts after it arrived broken. Chris turned me on to Neville who is the "Deco Dan" of Australia. The dough hooks from a super nice guy in England. It takes a villiage..

Available

Greg the mixer was sold in basic black, dove gray or wedgewood blue plastic trim. Then the colors of the metal parts could be in blue, yellow and pink, but not as pastel as the US models.

Chris, I knew they existed from reading the magazine ratings and I was lucky enough to spot them on craigslist in Great Britain. The pleasant chap agreed to send them so I won the auction, I had bid $30.00 as the max. The pair started at $4.95 and hovered there until the last 10 minutes. I crept up into the low tens and as 4 seconds someone else bid $30.00 but I won. Then came the surpised that $30.00 pounds is $57.50 US including shipping.

Yes, it can be a nasty shock....

...but having lived there, I'm used to the instant conversion required everytime I look at a UK website...

On the other hand, how cool to have something so rare.

Wouldn't the back story be interesting?

I'd love to know how a machine localised for Australia happened to be in a second-hand store in Seattle. Any ideas?

And I'm assuming it was Australian made (or at least assembled). Does it say on the identification plate?

The Rest of the Story

I have grown more interested the style and models of familiar brands to both the US and Australia. I saw a Sunbeam model A24 in Jeff Parker's mixer collection and was fascinated with the design. It was Jeff thsat explained it was manufactured for Australian markets. I learned how to us both the English and Austalian ebay sights and scanned them daily. Most sellers are not interested in shipping outside of the country. This mixer belonged to an Australian woman's mother. The family has relatives in California where they visit often and regularly send packages. I bought the mixer for $42.00 and with shipping it came to $104.00. The Australian seller packed the mixer head attached to the stand and in transit it was broken. The seller tried valiantly to connect me with repair services to no avail. After posting a picture here on AWorg Chris (ronhic)set a link to an Australian who repairs and restores mixmasters. I emailed Neville who sent me a new base plate and the blender attachment. I have yet to purchase a power adapter to be able to hear it run but I am very pleased to have it whole and part of my collection.
