Start instant breakfast drink, Chippos flash dried potato chips,Pillsbury Space Food sticks,Jello 1-2-3, Jello Whip-n-Chill,Campbell's frozen soups,Big Batch cookies,Gee,Your Hair Smells Terrific shampoo,Wacky "packs",Quisp cereal,Quake cereal,Hasbro "The Flying Nun" doll,AstroPops, Chocolite candy bars, Seven -up candy bars,Vote toothpaste,Micrin mouthwash,Finish dishwasher detergent.

I collected Wacky Packs, but some were kinda gross. And there was always one sticker that was hard to collect. I remember one of them was their knock-off of Final Touch.

I remember Finish very well; was my favorite, but always lost to Mom prefering Cascade.

Wasn't Quisp basically Capt'n Crunch in little bowl shapes?

Lavoris...

Sani Flush crystals...

Top Job...

Fantastik...

Spic and Span in the box...

I'd be amazed if anyone remembers this, but here goes. I seem to remember an aerosol can with chocolate syrup in it called "BIG SHOT". You pointed the nozzle down into a glass of milk and pushed sideways on the nozzle, similar to an aerosol whipped cream can. The force of the syrup mixed with the milk so you didn't have to stir.........Am I crazy Mr. Cleanjeans?????????????

Fizzies!!

Oh, how we all loved Fizzies at my house way back in the 60s. Especially the root beer variety.

Space Food Sticks were fun.

I liked the look of Jell-O 1-2-3 better than the taste of it.

My parents were true believers when it came to Micrin, and when she heard it was discontinued, Ma drove to several drugstores and bought the remaining shelf stock....I've always been more a Listerine guy (especially after my dentist told me I should be).

Fizzies!

Fizzies (made by Bromo-Seltzer) came back for a short time in 1996-98 I believe...I remember trying the Cherry flavored version. They were quite good! Later, they just disappeared off the shelves. Not sure if they still sell them *somewhere* or what happened.

Fizzies--

I had heard that they were back, then, but I never saw them around here, and I didn't have web access until 2001....

There are times when I believe that there is an alternate universe, where none of these products were discontinued, reformulated, recalled for glass shards.....

and...

I remember Fizzies,also Funny Face,a kool-aid type product,such as goofy grape,etc.,don't remember Big Shot,also remember Aerex disinfecting squirt-on floor cleaner,Step-Saver,Big Wally, Glory spray foam rug cleaner,Glo-Coat,Spray-n-Vac,Solo detergent,Hazel's all-purpose cleaner,PhisoHEX skin cleanser,...

And a couple more to add to our collection of memories

Dishwasher All-Mom always bought this one instead of Cascade which I liked better.

Glasswax-In a pink quart can, did a good job as I recall, but that wiping was so time consuming. Was supposed to be used for mirrors, windows, appliances, to bring out the shine.

Yes,remember Fizzies-Esp liked the Root Beer flavor.Has anyone else had them this way???You break the Fizzies tablet into half and put it in your mouth!!did this as a kid-moy mom hated it when I did that-made your mouth foam up and made you look rabid. The flavor was sure intense that way!!!Yes Remember "Big Wally" used it to clean walls in an apartment I was moving from-did a great job.Never used "Big-Shot" sounds cool.Yes did remember "Sani-Flush" worked great in cleaning glassware for my chemestry set I had a kid.Same with "Fantastik" was a good cleaner-
How bout "Janitor-in-a Drum" anyone use that-I used it a lot-did a good job.Cleaned floors nicely.

Mmmmmm. Chocolite.... (In my best Homer Simpson voice)

Big Shot! The cap was metal and dome shaped with a soda jerk's face on it. The can showed the rest of his body.

Dial shampoo. Palmolive dishwasher powder in the box that looked like a milk carton.

Space Food Sticks. I could have eaten a whole box of the peanut butter ones.

Here's an article on what happened to Fizzies. They were discontinued in 1968 after the sweetener they used, cyclamate, caused cancer in laboratory rats. In 1995 (almost had the year right...) Fizzies were re-introduced using NutraSweet, but then the company went out of business AGAIN and all inventory was discontinued by 2001, sadly.

I wonder if the whole cyclamate sweetener "scare" was the same as saccharin--would have to take enormous doses to cause cancer in humans that Sweet-N-Low or Fizzies couldn't possibly deliver.

Oh I remember that-well sort of

Abig announcement came on television one night telling us that sodium cyclamate had caused cancer in laboratory rats. The anchor then proceeded to name different items which contained it. Pre-sweetened Kool-Aid was one, some of the instant sweetened ice-tea mixes and soft drinks such as Tab and Fresca contained this stuff. Probably a lot more. The diet food world took a hit on this one. I don't remember such as wide a scope of "faulty products" up to the time as this was. Within a year GM was recalling all 65-70 Chevrolets citing possible exhaust problems, and several makes of color tvs, among them GE Emerson Syvania, RCA, were shorting out and starting fires. It was these things that got me interested in consumerism and CR magazine.

remembrances

I used to take Fizzies to restaurants and put them in my water. You shuld have seen the double-take reaction some servers would have.

Fantastik and Sani-Flush are discontinued?

Glass Wax is still made

I think Lavoris is still made.

One of the Funny Face flavors, Choo Choo Cherry, was originally called Chinese Cherry, but that wasn't "politically correct", the name was changed.

TAB

Tab kicked on until the mid 80's in Australia, but then it was discontinued due to its carcenogenic powers. I would've assumed that if the cyclamate sweeteners had been banned in the US that the ban would've followed in AU not long after.

Did Tab die a second death?

Fantastik and Sani-Flush are still made. I use Sani-Flush (with "blue bubbling action") myself. Tab is still produced but is not available in all areas; it's sweetened with a combination of saccharin and aspartame. I recently found out that Purex is using the Sta-Puf name. Their softener is called Purex Sta-Puf, though it doesn't resemble the original product.

Finish dishwasher detergent

Finish is still a major brand name in the UK/Ireland for dishwasher detergent.

It's a Reckitt Benckiser Product

Comes as:
Finish 4in1 Powerball tabs with Protector Action (prevents glass dulling)
Finish 3in1 Powerball tabs (detergent/rinse aid/water softening)

(the two above products have "salt action" which means in-built water softeners... totally unnecessary in euro dishwashers that have a built-in softener that works on the incomming water throughout the cycle.. basically for those of us who are too lazy to re-fill the salt container once a month!)

Finish 2in1 Powerball tabs (detergent/rinse aid)
Finish PowerPowder (regular or lemon fresh) with stain soakers.
Finish LiquidGel (Regular or lemon fresh) for delicate china.

Other products:
Finish PowerBoost powder (used in conjunction with normal detergent you put a scoop on the dishwasher door and it disolves really heavy grime on pots and pans more effectively using powerful enzymes)

Finish dishwasher cleaner:
Run your dishwasher empty with this little bottle upsidedown in the cuttlery basket or top shelf. A wax plug in the lid melts when the machine reaches temprature releaseing the liquid into the wash. It removes grease and lime deposits from the interior of the machine and the pump, filters, pipes and spray arm nozzles and leaves the machine smelling very nice.

FINISH 2in1 Dishwasher Freshener
(clip into the dishwasher to make it smell like lemons, mint or oranges at all times)

FINISH Protector
(clip into the dishwasher to protect glasses from being pitted and scratched)

FINISH Rinse Aid (regular or lemon fresh)

Prevents water spots and streaking for a brilliant shine!

FINISH Special Salt

For replenishing the ion exchange water softener in european dishwashers.

So the Finish brand's still alive and well!!

My favourite dishwasher powder was

Calgonite!

Probably because Aunt Irene (she of the Youngstown Kitchens dishwasher up the stret) used Calgonite.

After it was discontinued, we went to Cascade.

I like the dishwasher gels, especially Cascade Complete, but they seem more expensive per use.

Tab Lives!

Speaking as the #1 Tab fan, I can state that Tab lives! It's not easy to get--I have to drive up to PA to get it usually--but it's worth the trip. Tastes MUCH better than diet Coke.

In a pinch, Pepsi One and the new Diet Coke with Splenda are middlin'-to-piddlin' substitutes. Certainly the best of a poor round of choices.

You can still get Lavoris. In fact, they now have a peppermint flavor. Don't quote me, but I think the name is now owned by the company that re-introduced Breck shampoo a couple of years ago. They buy up older brand names and reintroduce them.

Oh, in addition to Choo Choo/Chinese Cherry, Jolly Olly Orange started out as Injun Orange.

veg who can't remember his middle name, but has no trouble whatsoever remembering this kind of crapola.

Yes tab is still around

But the formula last time I saw it had saccharin. Possibly now has nutrasweet, maybe splenda's next. It's hard to come by, was a coca-cola product and I don't know how much cc competes with itself. Seldom ever see Mr. Pibb, some parts of the country have it still.

BTW-this company that reintroduced Breck shampoo specializes in bringing back old products. Maybe they could bring back GM Frigidaire! I know-FAT CHANCE!

Oh, yes. The Vermont Country Store has EVERYTHING.

For a price.

I've noticed that with a little hunting, you can find anything they have elsewhere at half the cost. Still, we've been steady customers since before I was born, so the Orton family will continue getting my bucks.

I always remember TAB having saccharin, never cyclamates. Don't know if it did or if I just don't remember. I have some commercials for TAB that says is has a little sugar for taste. That's a new one on me! The current formula has both saccharin and aspartame in it. Wish they'd stick to straight saccharine. Or switch over to Splenda.

veg

TAB

is still made, usually have to go to a supermarket to get it. It has saccahrin, for those people who can't have aspartame due to a rare medical condition. With the new sweetners like Ace-K and Splenda, there may no longer be a reason to keep it around.
