If You Have Really Hard Water
A blend of sodium hexametaphosphate and STPP would give better results than the later alone. IIRC Calgon and other packaged water softeners used sodium hexametaphosphate along other water softening agents including STPP.

Apparently had a huge following, but so many states have banned phosphates in laundry products that it probably wasn't worth producing for the few states left Quixar was able to market. Bet there are still some product left in some Amway seller's home/garage.
