FS in the 1st or last rinse?

Hi All Many years ago the 2nd washing machine I owned was a Miele ( still going well to this day I understand from my ex that still live in the same house) This machine had 2 compartments for FS and I was told by a service guy that the one at the back was only used in country's that use FS in the 1st rinse and not the final as we do in the UK, anyone have any further info on this.

Are you sure it wasn't

A chlorine bleach dispenser? Years ago, in particular in southern European Countries, chlorine bleach was used in the wash. This was dispensed into the first rinse and the dispenser was typically located behind or beside the fabric softener compartment.

Fabric softener added in the first rinse would be rinsed out by the end of the cycle!

You also don't want to mix detergent with fabric softener, so it would be counter-intuitive to use it in the first rinse----except in the case of an emergency such as over-sudsing.

Panasonic frontloader

On the 15 minute wash cycle, the first rinse is fabric softener, the second rinse is a simultaneous fill & drain purge, then final spin. I presume that it must be to try to reduce suds quickly.
