I picked up a new lighting controller this afternoon for my church and my Father and I were playing around with it before I took it up there. I found that the unit has a "flicker generator " setting in it. It basically runs the dimmer up and down quickly at random periods and magnitudes. The effect will make an ordinary electric lamp look like it has a flickering flame in it. The amount of flicker, and the overall brightness can be varied. This ought to be really useful for stage effects where we want people maybe sitting around an artifical campfire, or to illuminate some torches on the wall of a scene or something.

Well, before I took the module up there, Dad and I wanted to have a little fun! We took the module into the basement of the house and plugged all the lamps into it, set the unit to flicker mode, turned the lamps off, and waited for mom to come home! Once she got home, it didn't take long for my phone to start ringing that there was something really wrong with the electrical wiring in her basement!!!! After we had our laugh, I revealed my secret box!

Oh man, we need new dimmer systems for the theater in the WORST way. One doesn't dim any more at all, just have to kill the lights completely. The other two are unstable, and the flicker effect is NOT wanted while a movie is running!
