Fust Novamatic 40.1...Here in Canada!

So this interesting machine was listed on Kijiji, and I bought it. I understand that Fust is store in Sweeden, so this must be the house brand washer.

The good the bad and the ugly:

Washer fills, Program timer works, Heater and Thermostat work!

Pump too weak to pump out, Motor not working...

When I first got it the motor worked for about 2 minutes, and then smoked and no longer works. Curiously, during what should be spin, if I manually spin the drum, the motor will turn, until it stops to reverse.

When I watch the pump spinning it seems to work OK, but when under load (with water) it tries and tries but can't pump.

Would be nice to get it going again. How many people in Canada have the luck to have a "real" top load H axis!

Does anybody have an idea who made this? Maybe then I could get a new motor and pump?

I think it's interesting that there is a labeled dispenser for bleach.

I'm not totally sure, but your washer could be a rebadged Antionio Merloni product.

Here are a few pictures of a Norwegian Upo (an Antonio Merloni brand). It's newer than yours, but looks the same on the inside. So it's an Antonio Merloni brand. Others than Upo are Ardo, Nordland, Servis, Edy, EBD, EFS, Elin, Tecnogas, Baumatic, Elto, Bompani, Blücher, Eurotech, Clatronic, Novomatic, Philco, Selectro, WegaWhite, Nardi, Eudora, Studio, Atlantic and Thor. Just to make it complicated. ;-)

If you

get any extra time Loius...could you hunt down a pump and motor. Maybe it is not even available. I have tried with English "googling" but no luck. I hope I didn't buy a "lemon"

The problem is Antonio Merloni went bankrupt. The company was taken over by Vestel in Turkey. Parts may not be made anymore.

If the motor turned a while after being turned by hand i would suspect and change the motor capacitor. If the pump is a magnetic one then you just have to replace it.

With the Capacitor...

are they plug in type? Get the old one out and replace with equal numbered one?

I went ahead

and checked for the capacitor. Well...as you will see, I think this one is indeed ready to be changed!

I think I may have found the replacement (see attached link). I would like to hear from someone who knows about the numbers on the can before I go and order it.

By the way...does anyone know what is the hard, black stuff that is busting out?

Oh yes you need a new capacitor! The black stuff inside is the dielectric of the capacitor itself. It is a 16 microfarad , 120V. An inexpensive replacement. Just remember one thing , when you install the new one and plug the machine the capacitor will charge itself and the charge will be then retained after disconnecting the plug. Do not touch the two connectors and take care to discharge the capacitor by inserting a well insulated screwdriver blade between the two connectors.

I had a look at the link you posted and the replacement seems correct. Anyway the price is much higher than the usual. A capacitor like this doesn t cost more than 8/10€!!!

What voltage are you running the machine on?

Sorry to ask such a basic question, but the symptoms suggest you are running a 240 volt machine on 120 volts...

the non-voltage sensitive parts (timer, valves, heater element) working (heater would work slower but still work)
pump working weakly (as it would if you ran a 240 permanent magnet motor pump on 120v)
main motor burns out (give a motor normal load but half voltage, it will turn weakly or not at all, and burn out in a couple of minutes if it can't turn.)

It's hooked

up to a 220v line. I have an German AEG 220v hooked up and it's working great.

Yes Christian, Baumatic has been part of the Antonio Merloni stable too. I don't know for how long. Antonio Merloni bought up a lot of national operating brands to get a foot between the door in every European country. Nobody ever heard of Edy outside the Netherlands, but overhere it was a well known brand for quite a while. Same with Servis in the UK. I'm not saying all Baumatic machines were rebadged Merloni products though, I don't know too little about the Baumatic brand. But I have seen some Baumatic machines that were clearly rebadged Merloni products.
