G.E. Filter-Flo Questions. Have never seen one before and have chance to acquire two

Hello everyone,

I have the opportunity to acquire two G.E. Filter Flo washing machines, but there's one fly in the ointment; they both leak.

The source of the leaks is unknown and I'm curious as to where the common spots on these machines are and how difficult it is to repair one.

To the best of my knowledge, they both run properly, they just don't quite hold water!

That first washer was the exact model my mom bought in late 1978 or early 1979 after me getting my next model up GE in April 1978.

Not much to repairing these really. They were bad about leaking after 10+ years of use sometimes. The leaks were usually fixed with resealing around hoses or the boot between the inner tub and transmission, not a difficult fix. You just have to pop the top up and remove the inner tub to get to it all. Hard to tell exactly where it is leaking without seeing it full of water. I imagine they would both be worth getting. Especially if the only problem is a leak.

Great washers

GEt them both, Filter-Flo's are fine machines. That avocado one has all the options you need, two speeds, 3 or 4 cycles, mini-basket and filter pan, you'll never regret it. Excellent turnover, great rinsing, dispensers, options galore. Buy it and fix the leak.

Had exact washer LOVED it. Cleans extremely well. First new washer I bought.

EX was in ( ashphalt) construction and all his clothes came out clean and fresh.

What a great find.. I've looked here for years and one hasn't surfaced.

OHHH, I would love these.

 

There are several scenarios that could cause leaking.  Some are easy fixes, others......  

If the tub has rusted through ..... after nearly 40 years, that could be tricky. 

Or it could be something simple like a hose leaking.

Those washers are getting to the age where the outer tub rust's through. There are fixes, like POR15, not sure how good they work.

Knowing they leak, I personally would not give a lot of money for them.

I grew up with the green model

My dad worked for Pay-N-Pak in the late 70's-the early 90's. Mom purchased that exact washer with the matching dryer but in almond. We had the set until the the early 90's then the washer went belly up and sent me to the laundromat and after the trip to the laundromat I went and bought her a new Whirlpool set.

I had a FF that only leaked near the top of the outer tub -- was caused by years of out-of-balance loads that the inner tub had rubbed a hole in the outer tub, so water would spill out of the hole during spin. Patched it up with epoxy and it never leaked again. (and also made sure I loaded the tub evenly to avoid any out-of-balance situations!)

You will have zero regrets whatsoever with these machines. They're perfect for tough loads like those super dirty denims and sturdy cottons.

One other question that popped into my head; is a Filter-Flo a larger capacity machine than my current daily driver which is a large capacity 1993 Maytag?

I'm going to say it's smaller...though I'm not exactly sure. I have the "Large" capacity Filter Flo and going from the Kenmore 28102 at 4.5 cu ft, it's at least half the size...no sure about the "Extra Large" capacity FF's though.

Does anyone have the cu feet on the Filter Flo's? I have an old brochure but it doesn't say the capacity size. I had heard the Large was about 2.0 cu ft and the ExtraLarge was like 2.8 cu ft.... anyone know?

They are the best. Too bad mine lasted only 7 years.

Common leak areas occur anywhere there are hoses and/or boots attaching to the tub. My '76 Dispensall had severe corosion at the base of the outer tub where hoses connected. It was actually a pretty easy fix though. Here are pics of the before and after repair I did. The washer is completely water tight now. Unfortunately I can't say the same for the tranny so in the corner it sits until I can tackle rebuilding and sealing that too.
