Gaggenau?

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

nope

I did see it with my own eyes. Worked in the factory for two years. If Kenmore can be built by various OEMS, why should it seem so damned impossible that Miele refrigeration is sourced by various ones, too?
Liebherr definitely does build some Miele...and they have some very good products.
For all I know - haven't walked the production line in Gingen since 2005 - B/S/H may, at this exact millisecond, not be sourcing more than some of the electronics.
Any way you cut it, I'd rather go with Miele because of my positive experiences with their service than any other German brand.

I had seen that Liftmatic Oven demonstrated on HGTV at the National Kitchen Show. A little different.
There is a building here on Beltway 8 in Houston that has the Gaggenau name on the outside of it. Must be a zone warehouse/office or something.

Gaggenau

Hello. I once saw a Gaggenau dishwasher (late 70's early 80's) made by Miele. Now its domestic appliances are made by Bsh. Miele range of refrigerators once was entirely produced by Liebherr. Now they have both Liebherr (top models) and Bsh (cheaper models) refrigerators in theirs range. They also use to outsource microwave ovens (Elcobrandt) and some economic gas hobs (Franke). I once had the chance to talk to a german Miele engineer who called me on phone after a letter expressing disappointment for the poor quality of my M336 microwave oven (outsourced by Thomson Brandt). They offeret to exchance my "thomson" model with an older model still made by them. The difference between the two ovens is really something you can notice at a glance! He explained me they stopped to produce microwaves ovens by themselves because of the very high costs which led to very expensive products.

Thanks, Marco.

Guess I ruffled one or two feathers there with the suggestion that one might, perhaps, have paid quite a bit for exclusivity and, in the end, be (gasp!) using the same thing as us plebes.
There are folks here in Germany who, to this day, won't consider anything but Constructa for their washers; I still won't buy anything from Bauknecht even tho' I know that Whirlpool has long since addressed their "quality issues". Oh, I just love those harmless sounding words instead of saying the real thing.
One of the pleasures of working with the B/S/H engineers was that I got to see (had to sign NDAs) some of their upcoming ideas.
Design and engineering were on the same team and it really showed in their products.

Steve,

Yes, most of the fridges are not frost free, there is no fan. Personally I prefer those over the frost free ones, food from the frost free ones doesn't feel as cold as from the non-frost free ones

The pictures of the fridges are all built in fridges, 123cm high and 56cm wide and are designed for building in a 60cm wide cabinet.

And yes, Gaggenau is a status brand, just like Bulthaup kitchens. They appeal to people who like design, but it comes with a price. Personally I think it's all too expensive, but I must say I liked their 70's and 80's ovens.

varies

In the last few years we have really broken away from the old, fixed system of build-in-able fridges. Until very recently, you were more or less forced to pay extra unless you took:
50, 55 or 60cm wide by (roughly, please anal-retentives let's not start THAT one again) 60cm deep by 85-87cm high.

Siemens also had a beautiful line up of 45 centimeter, upper scale fridges, stove and dishwashers for a while. May still - haven't looked.

In the last 10 years or so, we have gotten all sorts of variations. Many folks now have much larger units, side by sides, etc. The retro look (google SMEG) is big.

Actually, most fridges are self-defrosting in the cooler section but not in the freezer.

I've said it before: The only two US appliances which are better than our European stuff are dryers and fridges. If I had the space, I'd take both in a New York minute.
