New brush roll

This agitator works great on the berber. My older cat, (Fred, yes another Fred!), a blue point Siamese, likes to go out, eat grass and then come inside and throw it up. Well, there were about two places where he did that and it had dried in the rug. The Royal completely removed the crud and you would never know about Fred's little accidents!

the bag.......

Someone had run this vacuum without a disposable bag and the outer cloth bag was filthy. I vacuumed it out and ran it through the washer turned inside out and air dried. Unfortunately, the Royal name faded a bit in the washing process.

Okay, who wants to come over play with it? The vacuum that is.........

That Royal looks very nice, and at that price it can't be beat!
I would date it later than 1988 though, early-mid 90's would be my guess. I know somwewhere I have a brochure with this machine featured in it.
With the 4-row brush and 6.0 amp motor, that should clean very well!

I do need to get back to Chaaaaaarlotte and pay you and your vacuums a visit, one of these days.

Those Royals have never really done anything for me; I don't know what it is... I don't deny that they are great machines, well made--and they do clean very well. I've played with Jeff's--Royal that is. We carried them when I worked at THS Vacuum, and they sat and sat and sat and sat. No one ever purchased them--nobody wanted to pay that much for such a plain machine. And, of course, central vacs were our main business.

Congrats on your find! It's always nice finding a great deal on something fabulous!

Somonauk is south and west of me, maybe an hour drive or so? Its not all that far away.

Frigidaire Disposals: They were around for years, and made by Waste King through the early 80's. After that they were made by Anaheim and were the permanant magnet motor type. I have a Frigidaire disposal brochure that Greg placed about 1955 when he was here.
The disposal I have dates from the early 70's, and is a 1/3 hp BOL model.

Well I happen to think that Royal is very nice looking. I never remember seeing them for sale in stores or were they sold DTD. Too bad about the fading bag, I found out washing my Kirby bags that the color runs and I was doing it carefully in the bathtub with just a hint of detergent.
Oh, another question... does the top flip up like a Kirby to detach the nozzle?

Pete,

The blue circle comes off completely and you insert a "converter" that goes into the opening of the fan housing. You then attach a hose to that. I'm not sure if you remove the belt or not. It does not have a belt lifter like the Kirby and the front nozzle does not come off in the same manner. It is screwed to the main housing. I've never used attachments with one of these so it will be interesting to find out how it performs!

Fred, I never got much out of these either till I played with Jeff's.........Royal that is. Once they made a decent brush roll, upped the amps and improved the belt I developed much more of an appreciation for them.

Re the bag: the bag can be replaced and when and if I do that, I will convert it to a top fill bag which is far more efficient, cleaner and easier to change.

Oh......and please note Pete, no body modifications were made to the housing of this vacuum during it's restoration and nothing was done to change the manufacturer's specifications. No power tools were used in the clean-up and polishing either!

Belt's gotta go.

Yep, that's part of the pain of using those tools. You have to take the belt off every time you want to use the tools, then reattach it when done. I know they make a special plastic tool for doing that, which does make it a bit easier, but it's still a pain. In that regard, I like Kirby's system better--with the "Magic Finger" belt lifter.

Royal tools

Charlie,
I have a set of Royal tools if you'd like to explore the versatility of that Royal. While it is a bit tedious to attach/detach the tools, the have pretty good tool suction and will follow you around a room very nicely.

The Royal I have is model 2028, from 2002. It was a housewarming present from a fellow VCCC club member.

Fred-Running a Neppie With The Door Open

Fred - Just fire that puppy up and open the door before it locks on the wash cycle (repress the start button). Hold in the door button and she should fire right up. I would recommend putting a towel or something down in front of the machine for the occasional splash. Don't do it on the rinse cycle since the machine fills more for the rinses. Amazing what you learn from the washer folks. It was really fun watching the action. The only thing bad I have to say about the Neptunes is "No window." Otherwise I think they work great.

Well, had my mother waited until this summer to get the new washing machine, I'm sure I could have gotten her to get one of the new Neppies with the window in it.. Thanks for the tidbit! I know what I'll be doing while the turkey is in the oven..

I now have two Kirbys I found in two curbside discards with the usual debris form Rita. One a Sanitronic Dual 80 & the other a Classic Omega. However I need to design & build a pair of guards that prevent the belts from being shredded by the fan since I was trying a motor-generator (MG) set experiment with both vacuums with the safety switches held down with some makeshift hardware for the switches.
