Seems GardenWeb has merged with another site. Been perusing it a bit. I kind of like the new format. Anyone else?

Malcolm, Malcolm, Malcolm; for old time sake I went over to the website, renewed my membership and with excitment in my heart started looking at what members posted. I made it as far as the 'appliance' blog when I read about Mr. X who wanted suggestions on what to do to fix fubar Mrs. X had done.
If I understand correctly, the little woman (IN SPITE OF DIRECTIONS IN THE MANUAL) decided to self clean big $$ oven w/o removing racks (or something) and FRIGGIN MELTED X PARTS DURING THE CLEAN CYCLE! Hubby was looking for help in fixing the screw up.
Of course, my first thought was directed toward marrying out side ones gender, but then I realized you can't fix stupid.
So, am I over reacting, or should the little woman have to pay the repair bill out of her mani/pedi $$?

Ten (!) years ago when I was shopping for new laundry machines, I discovered "Laundry Forum" and this site. The most enduring benefit from that other place is the stimulus to obtain Firefox browser and its ad-blocking addons. Once I selected my new machines, I had little interest in reading for the nth time about how Frigidaire horizontal-axis machines would encounter bearing failure and/or spider failure; or how Miele was better than *anything else*; or the one Zealot whose position was that the Miele claim was true except but for the sole exception of Asko, which was better than anything else before or since. In those ten years my Frigidaire horizontal-axis has not suffered bearing or spider failure, and I am still reading AW.org.

There was someone who went on about how wonderful their new Miele laundry appliances were; then they became unhappy and returned them for a swap (Electrolux). Happy enough for awhile but then guess what? They were unhappy with the Electrolux set and returned those and swapped (again) back to the Miele. I sat there reading that thinking what appliance store in the USA allows one to return used appliances much less does so twice? I mean didn't they see this person coming?

It might just be me, but am sure MieleUSA has locked down various technical support material and or ceased being generous with advice because of Laundry Forum antics. Someone would find out how to get into this or that "service mode" and promptly share. Problem is persons kept messing with their machines and causing more problems than solved. Worse they would call MieleUSA to seek advice on how to undo what they've done. Rightfully Miele asked what happened and some were less than truthful but techs soon found out anyway.

ths.gardenweb site merged/taken over by HOUZZ

Malcolm actually I don't like the new format there. I find the gray and light green type hard to read and the thread headings are so spaced apart that quick legibility suffers and you must scroll more through the thread headings. I really am disappointed in the changes, Appliances and Laundry Room forums were my favourites followed by Plumbing with my online appliance time divided almost equally between this site and ths.gardenweb. You and Dadoes both offered help over there as well as here but it seems more people with modern laundry appliance problems and questions frequent that site so it was one more source of information. Of course on occasion someone goes off on a rant or tirade but still an interesting source of help for all things concerning the house. Now to me I find AW a more friendly site with a laugh or two to be found in most threads and I learn about a broad range of things in a free and easy flow of knowledge sharing from all the great people here-including sometimes surprising and unexpected but valuable information. Thank you all here.

Oh Launderess...

That person (Larsi) had a hell of a time with his/her Miele dryer and again went back to Elux. He swears they are the best thing out there now...

Larsi Is A "He" I Believe

Miele's recent dryer offerings at least what are sold in the USA seem to have their share of haters, so there you are then.

The only Miele dryer one would ever seek out is one of the older vented or perhaps condenser dryers. IIRC they no longer sell vented dryers in the USA.

I used to have an account on GardenWeb/ThatHomeSite, but when they got sold off to iVillage (remember that?), my login name, "Spambdamn" no longer worked. So I changed it to "Spambdamn_Rich" and that worked for a while, but like another here I gradually lost interest in the site because of the same topics being rehashed over and over.

Then I got an email from GardenWeb/Houzz saying I needed to confirm my account. So I clicked on the link and found none of the possible login name/password combos worked. Then I tried to retrieve my login name, entered the exact same email address as Houzz used to send me the confirmation demand, and guess what? They had no record of it. At that point, I decided it was a colossal waste of time and have washed my hands of the whole gang on THS/GW/iVillage/Houzz. They can go fish.

I got that same "confirmation" e-mail from them as well. I couldn't figure out why they would want me to "confirm" my UID & Password, so rather than risk a hack attack I just deleted the e-mail.

If I see another "What brand washing machine should I buy?" thread I'm going to scream!

I got the same "confirmation" message today. Being a trusting soul, I did what it asked. Takes you to a web page which asks for the E-mail and password as others have stated. Submitted that, which resulted in another copy of the same E-mail confirmation message. Performed the cycle again, got another same E-mail. So unless there are also some other spam messages accumulating in the filter, the process loops without termination.

Geez, haven't thought about that site in years. Never joined up or posted, only lurked. Could be interesting reading sometimes, and there was a lot of useful info to be found if you had the time to sift through it all, but certain forums did tend to be a little... hysterical. And don't even get me started on the constant obsessing over first world problems, or the sneering responses dished out by the self-appointed forum police. If your tastes were not sufficiently high-end, you didn't follow the pack mindset or your posts were otherwise not considered "worthy", it could come across as very unwelcoming in there.
