new gas-look electric bulbs

Hi all, we just came back from our yearly vacation in New Orleans and as usual, the gas lamps have stirred my heart again. I opened my mailbox this morning when we arrived home and found a package. Prior to leaving out I had ordered some of these new LED flame bulbs to go in my portable gas lamps that had conked out and couldn't be revived and I have converted them to electric. Those bulbs look amazing at night from the street. Mind you, these are NOT the flame flicker bulbs found at Walmart around Halloween...those are much too red/orange and look fake. One would be hard-pressed to tell these are not real flames. Heck, they even came from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I've added the link below so you all can see what they look like. Expensive, yes they are, but cheaper than new gas lamps and a new gas line. Hopefully they will last a long time.

I agree about gas lamps in front of people's homes. We use ours primarily for lighting. The doorway is recessed and at night it's like a black hole in there. The gas lamp makes sure it's bright as day all the time. It also provides security light for our cars on the driveway.

The house across the street put in an electric light and it doesn't thrown anywhere near the amount of light our gas lamp does. I've had a neighbor ask if we have a generator before. Why? Our light is on even though the power may go out. And then it's the only light that's on the entire block!

The only thing about having a gas light with mantles is making sure you don't hit the pole with the lawnmower. The mantles will break pretty easily. They aren't that expensive, about $8 a set. We put some edging and gravel around the base of our pole to minimize that.

There are some houses here in town with mantle gas lamps and I think they are really neat too, especially with all the light they put out.

I wonder if I could use those candle flame bulbs in our house lights, they kind of have an antique look that could pass as a gas lamp except the sockets are upside down, but the glass has bubbles in it that make it opaque enough to hide the socket position. I have the Edison style bulbs in them now.

These have candelabra bases. They are NOT very bright though, so if you are looking for more light output these may not fit the bill. I did have night light bulbs in my refurbished lights until these came in the mail. However, if you are looking for ambience, these have it. I am so pleased so far. I went out to pick up some supper earlier right after dark and had to stop in front of the house just to admire the flicker of the flames!
