This was referenced in another thread, and is created here so as not to hijack that thread.

Gas lighting was widespread in New York City both indoors and out.

Mouldings and woodwork and furniture was a dark color to hide the soot that was relaeased. Paint was expensive and reserved for the wealthy at one time.

 
Are there any buildings, public or private, that still have gaslights or piping for it in New York. And, if they in fact do have gaslights, can they still use them?
 
Until fairly recently, there was a great old restaurant called Gage and Tollner's in Brooklyn that had the beautiful gas lights, but the restaurant is no more....

In my childhood, Kenmore and Albermarle Terraces, near me in Flatbush, Brooklyn, had the gas lamps themselves, but AFAIK they were removed as the neighborhood changed and the vandalism got worse (the vandals even stole the copper gutters and leaders off the houses!)
