"The United States is negotiating deals with European countries to exchange fingerprint and DNA data in criminal and terrorist cases, and in some circumstances to transfer data on race or ethnic origin, political and religious beliefs, or sexual orientation.

"Such agreements are a condition for granting citizens of newer European Union member states the right to enter the United States without visas, and for maintaining that right for older E.U. members. U.S. citizens already enjoy such a right when traveling to Europe.

"Senior Bush administration officials said the data exchange is crucial for spotting dangerous people before they enter the United States and for furthering criminal and terrorist investigations. "

Yup. No surprise. Especially when you consider that most Americans sat idly by, eating chips and pork rinds while this administration conducted massive data mining and surveillance operations with no oversight or accountability and then demanded immunity for those communication companies that cooperated illegally with FBI "requests" for information. Even now, the Senate is taking up the matter in a bill that includes immunity for these companies that shared confidential information with the gubberment. How many of us have written or contacted our senators and representatives expressing our opinions on the matter?

Thanks for posting this, Jeff.

This is something right out of a nightmare, isn't it? To me, what's infinitely scarier than what Bush is doing (which, as Lawrence points out, should be completely expected) is the lack of public outrage. Bush has been busy destroying our free society for the last seven years, trampling on our Constitution, illegally monitoring our bank records, our phone conversations, and on and on and on, polarizing us on every issue, and there's not been a single organized movement to stop him. Not one mass march. Nothing.

My partner and I were discussing this last night, and we're ready to throw in the towel and move out of reach of America's implosion. The world has seen this movie before, and it always ends the same way: fascism and eventual world war.

A friend and I have been discussing this

I think it's eerily close to 1938.

Going to be an interesting(!) next few years, no matter whom is elected, however, I still think Obama is the better choice.

How exactly would anyone have access to that kind of sensitive information to transfer it in the first place.

I mean for example, the Irish Government doesn't have any files on me detailing my trade union membership, political party membership or sexual orientation.

I mean that kind of information could only be obtained by actually spying on someone!

They do have records somewhere that would know if I had a criminal record, driving offences, paid tax, claimed welfare, etc though.

Here in the U.S. you can plug anyone's name into a search engine and get a list of their political campaign contributions over $200.

Union membership is also in the public record.

As for sexual orientation I'm not really interested in how they get this info, but I'd love to know what relevance they think it has to national security or terrorism. Just bizarre IMO.

I just don't know...

Considering the downright LOUSY job the Democrats have done since taking over the Congress in 2006, I think it would be a grave mistake to give them the White House too.
After all, when Dennis Kucinich called for impeachment hearings for Bush and Cheney, Speaker Pelosi actually called doing that a "waste of time" Now the Democratic controlled Congress has something like an 8% approval rating? Go Figure...
We elected Democrats to hold the Republicans accountable and end the war...They have done neither.

I am going to hold my nose and vote for McCain, whom I view to be the lesser of 2 evils.

No, no! It'll be a great thing for the Democrats to win the House, Senate and Presidency! They would then be able to better monitor all the rich people better to tax all their illegal wealth and pull this country out of debt and pay for health care for all the illegal aliens! They sure wouldn't monitor anyone poor, in the name of diversity and tolerance.

Obama------

just voted to allow immunity for the telephone companies who allow the government access to personal information on American citizens.Proved he is no better than the Republicans. Nancy Pelousy is continuing to make stupid comments and doing idiotic things. If ever a political party shot itself in the foot-------it would be the Democratic Party.

Dubya is an evangelical. He continues to cater to evangelicals. Jerry Falwell once told a reporter from Vanity Fair that "he speaks with Bush or Cheney on a daily basis, and no major decision is ever made without consulting with the evangelical leadership in America" (Falwell, James Dodson, John Hagee, etc.). This was NEVER disputed by the White House, and NONE of the US media had the genetalia to investigate it furthur.

So HIV+ = Gay
Gay = threat
Gay = terrorist, and so on, and so on.

None of it surprises me in the slightest and it shouldn't surprise ya'll either.
Don't get any ideas that Obama is going to be the "guiding light" either. He is busy as hell cuddling up to the evangelicals right now.Thats politics as usual. He is willing to throw gays under the bus to steal some of McCain's thunder. Thats how it has always been.(And no group of evangelicals is more venomously homophobic than the black evangelicals.I'm from Atlanta-----I know all about how they spew hatred from the pulpit.) Nothing has changed. Hate to be so negative. But, I just don't hold out too much hope for this election.

Looks to me like "We the People" are going to excluded-----again. Wouldn't it be nice if being "gay" was a NON-issue. If gays were afforded equal rights under all laws just like everybody else and then none of the other stuff would matter any more. I wonder if I'll see such a thing in my lifetime?

In the mean time our economy is headed down the tubes and not one of the candidates has offered up a realistic idea on waht to do about it-----because they all know-----no matter who takes over Dubya's mess-----they are not going to be able to turn it around. Giving to us 'po folks and taxing the hell out of the rich won't help either.
I NEVER had a poor person offer me employment, and jobs are going to start getting pretty scarce.

What a mess.

Oooooh----o.k.----I'm off my soapbox----too early in the morning!

Did someone say the ICK factor in another thread?

I still say give me a candidate I want to vote FOR, rather than ones I have to vote against.

When a poll was taken (WITHIN the country) not long ago about whether it was believed this country would still exist in 100 years, I was flabbergasted that some said "NO". I am no longer shocked at this response.

I don't think this data-interchange idea will fly at all in Europe, there are MUCH tighter controls on data protection within the EU and there's considerable concern about sending unnecessary information about citizens to the US.

There seems to be a mentality that all of this information should be gathered simply because it can be gathered as we now have all these new fangled database technologies.

It seems that we're sleep walking into a surveillance society where the authorities will record your every movement just in case they need to investigate them for a future crime that you may commit!!!

They're moving into the realms of the Stazi, the Gestapo and various other horrendous secret police organisations that we fought wars to get rid of!

This Transport for London (London Transport Authority) poster campaign was obviously intentionally using Orwellian references, but even so...

Spooky!

The photo:

Also, when I enter the US, it's starting to feel as paranoid as you'd expect at a border crossing in the 1980s in the USSR...

There's something VERY wrong with all these moves towards insane levels of border security.

Also, while the police / border guards at US or indeed at European airports are so busy checking that you don't have the wrong type of deodorant or, that your toothpaste is more than 10 ml, harassing old grannies and insisting that 1 year old babies take off their booties for the xray machine, the real bag guys are more than likely getting past via some other route!

As far as I'm concerned, if we just throw away all our freedoms and live a police state, we're just letting the terrorists win.

Here's that photo:

Steve, I don't give our existing federal government another 20 years to live, let alone 100. We're already to the point where a large majority of Americans feel completely disenfranchised, and believe their interests and views are not represented. I don't know what form the revolution will take, but I believe it's going to happen soon.

Ah yes, the good ol' days of slavery for blacks, lynchings for gays and kitchens for women.

Give us a break.

"Our Founding Fathers"

were little more than an educated (mostly), affluent (in some cases) elite band of REBELS, of REVOLUTIONARIES. Although they had the best manners of the times, they were not always nice people.

Furthermore....separation of Church and State? Their idea, not Madalyn Murray O'Hair's. They had had enough of Theocracy, thank you very much.

Even though I am a regular Communicant, and try to act as a true Christian, I am delighted that my participation is
OPTIONAL. It was not optional in pre-Revolutionary War New England.

They were not about the status quo.

Oh, yes, they had their flaws. Slaveholding among them.

However, they were not singleminded. If I could lay my hands on Benjamin Franklin's Autobiography--have a copy, not sure exactly where at the moment- (a drinker "Beer is proof that God loves us, and wants us to be happy," and a notorious admirer of the female form, including, but not limited to, Debby, his wife.....) He has several telling quotes about changing one's mind when new information is presented.

Flame away. Fill my email box. I giveth not a poop. Oh, and I am still here. My birthday begins in a little less than 6 hours, and I am taking no prisoners.

Which brings me to <B>GuantanaOhforgetit.</i>

One last thing-- "In God We Trust" was added to United States currency in the freaking 1950s. Joe McCarthy era.

Thank you, Jeff-

It is officially tomorrow. :)

You could, if you wanted to, and only if you want to, wish it to me again tomorrow.

Thank you,

GOP=Gas and Oil Party

What companies are profiting in our recessive economy right now? Gasoline is a goddamn commidtiy and a utility. The oil companies blame rising prices on a hemmroid on ass of the prince in Saudi Arabia, but do they ever take a discount on THEIR margin? The oil dropped about 10 bucks a gallon yesterday. Did the gas stations take the price down? When it goes up 10 bucks a gallon, they get the ladder out and change the price THAT day, when it goes down, they loose the ladder. This is bullshit, and price gouging, and a monopoly. Someone is communicating gasoline price fixing in this nation, and we need to make an agenda of the next President to investigate. Dont blame foriengn countires, gas in Mexico is 2.15 a gallon.

The original name given to "Operation Iraqi Freedom" was "Operation Iraqi Liberation", but Cheney voted it down for obvious reasons.

Every time Cheney and Bush rattle their sabres it's tens of billions of dollars more in the pockets of their family and friends in the oil biz.

Conservatives reclaim America?

Did you mean South America? There is, after all, oil there and just full of pesky, uncooperative dictators for you to topple and occupy militarily. This brand of foreign policy has worked to the advantage of Bush's buddies so far, it's wise to not upset the applecart now. You'll have to scrape the bottom of the treasury coffers though, they seem to be empty at the moment. Sorry, did you mention illegal wealth? Hmmmm...

"the way our forefathers intended"?? Do you mean when they brought the constitution down from the mountain on tablets? Good thing there were all those dinosaurs around to ride so they didn't have to walk!

Vote McCain ;-)

The best President we ever had was Jimmy Carter, who was totally for the people of America, not the American Political People.

He knew in the 1970's that America's dependance on foriegn oil was going to cost us our economic freedom. He put taxes on gas guzzling vehicles and urged everyone to turn back the thermostat and conserve our way out of the energy crisis.
He was pretty much slaughered by Congress for his ideas. He should be re-elected as President.

Then along came the movie star President Reagan, with only half his brain functioning, who saw no energy crisis, no AIDS crisis, just prosperity for all who had a fucking credit card.
Eventually America should realize that being either a Republican or a Democarat is so polarizing in our nation that it consumes 95% of our time fighting each other, and the other 5 percent of the time that our elected politicans should be representing the people, they are either drunk or on vacation.
Elected officials should have no political party after when they get elected, they should become the American Party, for the people.
A Democatic Congress or a Republican Congress, how freeking stupid. Let our reps vote, without that stigma of polarization.

I think once you are in the Senate and the House, your in, and you have no political party, just a duty to serve the people who elected you. We should not even count votes by Repubicans vs Democrats in these issues. It is as stupid as Coke vs Pepsi.

Democracy happens at the poll boths, then whomever is elected is in fact a public servant to the people, not a spokesman for their political party that the taxpayers pay for.
