My new GE washer wanted its software updated. Okay... when I returned to the app, a new option was available. The washer will now, if authorized, order itself more detergent for its 50oz dispenser directly from P&G — Tide Autodose. Could this be anything other than a co-branded Tide Plus Ultra Oxi? I’ve been using Tide with Bleach Powder and Tide Ecobox or Tide Ultra Deep Clean. I’m curios to see how Autodose compares and how it’s priced.

Looks like a rather small bottle, so probably overpriced. I would expect an autodose system to draw the detergent through a hose from a large container, such as a five gallon bucket, as the Tide Professional System does.

I also have no desire for a washer (or any other appliance) that communicates with the outside world.

Autodose Washers

With all the problems with overly complicated and troublesome new appliances I would never get and or use such a system even if my washer came with it.

GE had auto dose DWs a decade ago and they were a disaster, it is simply not that hard to add the appropriate amount and type of [ FRESH ] detergent and other additives when starting a machine.

My washer came with the Autodos feature...

I didn't pick the washer because of it but for other options and this was included. I didn't think I would use the autodos but the reality is, the detergent does a great job so why not? It's not overly perfumed which we like, the clothes come really clean and it costs about the same as what I was spending. It took a few tries to get it configured to work correctly with my soft water but I think I found the right setting. I still have a fair amount of the powder I was using so I have been switching off between the autodos and the powder to see if there is any noticeable difference and there really isn't so why not go for the convenience? I wouldn't normally use a liquid because I found them to be too messy but using this option I don't have to deal with all that.

I will only use their brand of detergent because I'm concerned other liquids may not work. I don't want to clog up the lines or anything like that. I've been using it about six months and six months from now I may have a different opinion but for right now I'm happy with it.

I saw an interesting analysis of P&G that their products have become sooooo commoditized that they may actually need to subsidize installation in multifamily houses dishwashers and laundry which use an automated replenishment of P&G supplies for them to make money in the future to the degree they're accustomed to.
