While out thrifting today I found a few goodies, including this GE Blender. I'm assuming this is one of the models GE developed to fit the Americana over/under fridge. With a 5.5 amp motor it's quite a beast. Can any tell me what year this one might be? Thanks-Cory

<a name="preview">Yeah, I figured it might be overpriced. But, after I posted my first note, I saw that the eBay machine has a 6.3 amp motor! So, you could still have one-up on Cory (with 5.5 amps)! :-)

Date of Cory's Blender:

I'm not 100% sure on that date I gave, but my memory is that they were around at that time.

I checked the only reference I have on GE small appliances - the 1971 GE small appliance catalog (Shameless plug - available on Automatic Ephemera!).

That catalog shows a blender almost identical to Ben's, differing only in the little badge above the switch control. It does not show Cory's model at all.

I think those were 70's and early 80's with tweaks here and there. The first ones are the chrome ones from the 60's and surprisingly there's been a few of the chrome ones on ebay lately that haven't even gotten a bid even with a low starting point.

That's a compliment of the highest-order Sandy, LOL, thanks!

Looking at the pictures in this thread I notice GE kept busy making continuous tweaks to the design. Just look at the glass pitcher and handle changes. Interesting stuff. -Cory

The GE and older Warings shared a similar shortcoming in that the blades were not removable. Waring started to construct their jars with a detachable base in the mid 70s and some models of Warnigs had blades that locked into the hole in the base of the jar, but for easiest cleaning and especially after you make something thick, it is helpful to be able to unscrew the base and remove the blades to get all of the product out. I know that you can put hot water and a couple of drops of detergent in the jar and rev it a few times to clean it and if you only make milk shakes, that's OK, but before food processors, I used my Osterschnauzer for a lot of chopping and appreciated the removable base. I have a recipe for banana bread from the Panasonic Blender cookbook that I used to make in the blender. It was fun to add the bananas at the end through the hold in the lid and watch them twirl around as they were pulled down into the vortex.

The last time I ordered a replacement blade for the Oster, I bought the ice crushing blade because the shape is better for grinding dry ingredients. I grind oatmeal into oat flour and that new blade makes the oats move beautifully. No stopping and shaking anymore.

I prefer the blender jars with the NON removable blades-actually EASIER to keep them clean and less chance of leaking. So far there are NO removable blade blender jars that get the NSF sanitation certification. For VitaMix jars-if you have to remove the blades for detailed cleaning or blade assembly replacement you can remove the blade nut with a screwdriver or a wrench sold thru VitaMix.So far have had to replace the blade assembly only a few times on an older VM machine-the blade kit includes the blade assembly and gaskets.Even when making my own peanut butter like the fixed blades better.

Nice catch Cory. I think where you live, there are thrifts that aren't overcrowded like here. It's harder these days to find the vintage things, as they end up on CL ,eBay etsy.com or elsewhere before we get them. Just to support that idea: I've been looking for items before they get shelved, in the shopping carts.
This is sometimes helpful, if the bulk of women don't beat me to them.

Chromed and un-chromed versions are interesting, with minor design differences. Also, the GE blender is different in that it wasn't set on center, relative to the stand, so it protrudes out...kind of cool.

Cory...Sandy isn't far off on your finding ability.
