GE DW In Reply # 94

I uninstalled and picked up this DW today, it does indeed appear to be almost never used. It is actually a little newer than I guessed from looking at the picture. It is a SD400D4 model or TOL 1967 DW, it is the first of the side winder motor DWs.

I already have a SC800E [ Americana one model year newer and almost the same DW otherwise ] in the museum it was a convertible portable which I converted to a BI model, the 67 DW is in a little better shape so if anyone wants the SC800E it is here for the taking, otherwise I will take a few parts off and scrap it soon.

The Americana is avocado.

Looked sparkly new at first sight

John - glad that DW got a good home and will be in a lot of GE appliance company. It's amazing, to me, that such appliances still exist in such condition.

John, I was wondering if it had the side winder motor when I saw the "new" extra wide wash arm.  "new" motor/pump design with the "old" control panel.  "Interesting".  what does the 800E look like inside and out?  How does it differ than this one?  I have a feeling it may be more differentiated than you think.  I'm glad you saved it.

Late 60s TOL GE DWs

Hi Bob, there are only a few differences other than styling that I see, the earlier model has a wetting agent dispenser that has to be set for each cycle if you want WA dispensed. They both have the gentile-wash option for Christal-China that air-rates the water to reduce washing pressure.

Interestingly they both have the little wash-arm under the SW basket, but on the newer E model DW it was NEVER connected to water FROM the factory, GE found out that having this feature connected caused some type of performance problems and whenever we serviced one of these early DWs with this feature we were to install a rubber plug under the SS arm to stop all water flow through it.

By the time the E model was assembled GE stopped hooking up the SS arm in the factory, BUT continued installing the silly little wash arm till the sales literature could be up dated and the feature deleted, you have to wounder how many people wondered why the SS arm was always in the same position at the end of a DW cycle, LOL.

Thank you John.  I kind of liked having to manually set the jet dry dispenser.  there are times I would not want it used and times to use it.

I'd love to have the fridge in post #47.. There was one similar to it for sale about 4-1/2 hours north of me and I almost got it but the seller sold it to someone else even thought I contacted her about it first. I was loading my truck when she called me back.. I'm still sore about it months later. :-(
