I did the best I could to get a photo of the dryer flame as Rusty suggested. You can see what I think was a mostly blue flame. Definitely not a "small" flame.
Also, while on my hands and knees looking deep through the burner tube and flame box to take this photo, it looked like a burned object at the bottom center edge of the box. You can see the charred remains of what looked like a piece of insulation or plastic. I believe that is what was causing the burning smell after all.
The dryer was moved and carried in a number of positions when I got it. I think the item might have dropped into the flame box area during the move.
I vacuumed the burned object out, ran the dryer through a full cycle, and the smell was gone. No evidence of any further problem. So hopefully that chapter is closed.
One thing for certain though, I will stay in close proximity to this dryer whenever I use it. But I really think it's OK now.
