Hi all, I think it's the time for my filter-flo to have it's agitator changed.... not sure what happened and when but I could notice it's starting to peel off alot
My agitator is a prolonged neck one.... I was told it being an  unusual configuration... it's a whole block, despite I've seen a particular agitator that you could take off the neck in this website mine is a whole thing...you can't take the neck off...

well, if you can't find a "whole piece" one like you already have....you may have to reserve to one like in the link, gather the seperate pieces and put together...

never seen a while piece one though....interesting!

best bet is ebay....and even if you don't find someone seeling one right away, look for someone selling a lot of GE FF parts, send him a message, chances are he may have one...

is this a Mini-Basket version......other options could be the straight 3 vane activator.....or even a Two-in-One(which uses the short agitator post) and change it to a RimFlo!
 
Hi Martin, yes this is a minibasket version,   so you say that  even a straight vane or rim-flo could fit my machine anyway?

I wanted to have some delucidations about the agitators and know if I could actually use another of another type or if I need this exact one...
What do I have to look for one? What are their measures and differences? Also do the spline engage change from agitator to agitator? I'm pretty ignorant about filter-flo agitators, I always been confused about...

yours is a tricky one, agitators can be changed around, but finding all the combinations you need may be a little challenge...

the spines of both size trannies are the same, although I have been told on a few, the spline is a little different, no biggie in your case, we just use your same agitator block over again if we have to....I have never encountered anything different, except the ones like your style, have a bolt thru the center, most others just push down into place....we'll come to that when and if we need to...

by the style of your agitator, I will assume you have the shorter shaft tranny...so basically any standard capacity agitator will fit, ramped or straight vane, just matching up minibaskets and filter for each one...and then theres the issue of the increased height we have to find that add on piece....

shop around first to see what you can find......

there may also be the option to change out your tranny to the taller post, that might open a window to a lot of changes as your mood sees fit.....I have all large capacities, with the larger post....variations are many

No....just the tranny.....in the last years of the FilterFlo, they used the large tub, but the tranny for the small capacity machine....its all about being cost effective, one tranny, one activator, fits two size machines!...for the larger size they just added the extension on to the top of the activator...I believe both size machines were still available, many parts were dual purpose for the most part....

mini basket versions got the filter pan.....others just got the RimFlo design....
 
Last Style GE FF Washer Transmissions

All used the same transmission as already stated, BUT these washers have a different agitator shaft and you can ONLY use an agitator for one of these last style washers on this different transmission, UNLESS you want to change the complete transmission to the earlier style transmission, you can then use ANY GE agitator you like in your washer, you must match the older style transmission to the capacity of your washer as there were two different transmission shaft lengths.

Thanks for reply, so only agitators for that particular length or  the standard plus the attachement,  I will measure the shaft  and I'll look for it around...being sure it's a bolt engaged one and not push down.

I will likely need your help again to be sure I'm buying the right thing...

Thinking better about it....

Yes I didn't understand well this thing of the smaller shaft in extra large capacity machines....

I'm still a little confused about....I understand that I could put also a shorter activator, having actually water at vane level, but then why the extension thing? Or the water reaches it over it?

All I know is that in my machine the water leaves the top of each "vane" about 0.40 inch uncovered on the top...but for large loads sometimes I just turn knob to reset and I add some more water to be above the line....there's to say my agitator is whole piece, if it wasn't  so I'd probably get water into the extension.... it's still a little confusional for me the thing....
How much is an extra large capacity earlier transmission tall  from the basket supports to the spline? Mine look not so shorter than the agitator actually.....

Lets see if we can clarify....you seem a little lost...

there were still two sizes of outter/inner drums.....lets just stay with Large and ExLarge for sizes...since they changed the words around a few times....or if you want small and big, no matter how you look at it...

to be cost effective and not built two trannies, two agitators, and so on, for a few parts they manufactured one style for both machines, but the larger tub is taller, to compensate, an extension was added to the small agitator, making it fit the taller tub....

the water level for the highest set should be just comming over top of the "balance ring".....this pic shows the proper level for the largest setting of any size tub....

John is correct about the agitator splined shaft, you may have to pop out your original block and fit into another agitator if needed...just be aware of this...

and like I mentioned, we can change a few things out, and add the 2-n-1 agitator, losing the minibasket, but gaining the handwash version.....

this machine here has the largest tub, and the short tranny, this agitator has the extension built in, and bolts down in place, and a simple flip of a knob, and the outter part comes off exposing the handwash section...

this is a great idea for single speed machines as well, by removing the outter part, a gentler wash action is created....no two speed clutch needed!

that looks about right....but I would shop around.....thats waaaay too much!

for that price you could get the other tranny and agitator.....

just keep looking...or check out some other ideas...
 
Thank you, got it,  it's more clear now.
 I've some  more questions, since you say I may have to pop up my original spline shaft block and put  into the  other agitator...how can I know this prior to buy a new one? And eventually how can I do this job? Is it difficult?
I like the idea of the Hotpoint 2 in 1 agitator you told me before....what about the filter pan though, I don't use mini basket so that one is not a problem actually, but renounce to the filter pan is out of discussion. LOL

Newer Style GE FF Washer Agitators

Martin I may be wrong, but I though that the last style bolt on agitators did not use an agitator drive block at all. the newer style transmission shaft had much larger splines that mated directly into the plastic agitator. I am not at the shop now or I could look at the 1996 GE Spot-Washer washer that is there which has this newer style agitator.
 
well....with this 2-n-1 agitator....you will have to go with the RimFlo filtering....or none at all....doesn't matter....

any agitator you get, once you try to put it on, it will either fit or not....

getting the old one out is not that difficult, usually a long screwdriver, or what I use is a socket with a long extension, and rubber mallet, and pound it down thru the top of the agitator....

to install, place block on shaft in machine, and once lubed, slide the agitator onto it...may take a little force, or even a few hits with a mallet to seat all the way down, but thats all there is to it

an agitator like in this link would most likely fit yours as well...all that would need to be done is re-use your block, and find the top piece.......this is one off a V14.....it would be killer to find one off a V12 with the tapered vanes....although in bakelite black color only....a turquoise 3 vane straight could be used as well....options options options

Newer Style GE FF Washer Agitators

A hah, I learned something new, Thanks Martin. I had though that these newer style GE FF washer agitators did not have a removable drive block. We did not see many problems with these later washers and they did not make them very long either.

You helped me so much and explained  a lot of things that always been a mistery  to me and of which I always wondered about.

I think I will opt for an activator, despite I like the idea of a 2 in 1 agitator I just like to still use the filter pan...

Well damn Freddy I went to my dealer to get a dishwasher rack and on the truck there was a GE FF that was going to be scraped so I asked for the Mini Basket and the FF pan I was going to use it for a container to store detergent in. If I would have known I would have gotten the agiatator for you. I wish that someone would harvest the parts off of these machines they are being sold for scrap because they can make more money off of the scrap. Sorry I have sold the mini baskets and made good money off of them that is why I will pick them up. 
 
Well, thank you anyway Carl....I'm still looking out there for an agitaor, that black one in the link liked to me but looks like it's ruined a little, not sure if it is limescale or not but looks like is pretty worn and rough on the surface (looks ate by acid or is it just me?) so even if good price maybe not a good deal.... but I so liked the idea of having one of those VTG agitators, I especially like the entire cap assembly  which is different than  newer filter-flos.... but that would have been another rare thing to be found.....so I think I must hope someone puts a newer one on sale for a fair price....above $100.... that's just crazy as price....but is from desperate people like me they makes their money.... damn them!!!
