Recently found this washer, which has been left out in the elements evidently. Need your advice -- is it worth salvaging?

Not a good day for GE, nor for MAYTAG
Looks like someone actually blew up the wringer.
I've seen worse things restored by some of the resident geniuses here, and I think that elevated control panel model from the late 50's is someone's dream machine--i just forget whose.
See if you can remove the mangled Maytag wringer pieces--Oh Geoff is going to weep tonight--and take a picture of the control panel and an interior shot od the tub.

Very cool - a 1959 Filter-Flo! Looks like it's had a hard life, but still would be hard to just let it go.

Did you happen to open the lid? If so, how good or bad was the interior?

As you scroll down, the rust reminds me of that organic alien fungus sprayed on the ground in War of the Worlds.
Decay sometimes has a beauty all its own.

this is a little newer but might help ease the wringer pain

Anything is possible with the right amount of dedication - and resources 
To many, it would be easiest to part it out - the glass on the display actually looks to be in pretty good shape.
While it is possible to restore anything - this dream machine of many would require just a bit more finesse than your normal 'barn' find. Cabinet *could* be sanded and painted, porcelain top *could* be in good shape still, the chrome trim could be blasted and re-dipped, the panel bezel could be blasted and repainted, and we can just cross our fingers at this point that everything under the lid is in tip top shape. A replacement motor would probably be in the works, as well as rebuilding the valve, etc. Timer would wisely need to be rebuilt, and all wiring replaced. I think I'm gonna stop.
While that would turn away 99 out of 100 people, there are a few who would love a project of such dedication.

Wow, thats the same model my mom had when I was born. I really wish it was close enough to pick up. I have been looking for one of those for years! It would be an agressive project but I hate to see you crush it!

That's the washer we had after the 56 Hotpoint when we moved to a larger house. In the basement was a 59 filter flo only ours was that year's MOL one speed model, not the TOL loike this find is. Lighted dial with two separate cycles for normal and short (in red letters). White toggle switches for wash, rinse temps and water saver. Seafoam green activator top with copper pan.

It can be restored, but could cost up to $1000.00 to do it right. All the trim needs to be plated, cabinet repainted, ect. The cool thing about restoring this machine, is one could make it any colour they would want to. When they are this far gone, the "sky is the limit" Also the control panel itself is in good condition. Not broken, and it looks to be clear and not faded out.
Also, a newer "parts doner" machine could make this restoration much easier and faster to do.
If this machine were closer to me, I would take it on in a heartbeat. Its all there, and it is untouched.

I've restored machines like that before but it takes a lot of time (3 months minimun), $$$$ and effort. But it can be done if you really want.

Personally I wouldn't pay $5 for a machine in that condition, something like that has to be FREE before I'd take it. Good luck with it on eBay, there will be lots of relisting fees if you're considering anything remotely big...
