GE Filter-Flo: Repair?

My elderly grandparents have an older GE washer and an even older GE dryer that they purchased new. The dryer is a 1975 gas model and the washer is a 1991 model. The washer has a leaky pump, but that is all it needs to be 100%. It is not being used now as there is a first floor laundry, but my question is would these appliances be okay to use as a person's only set, like two times a week? As of right now, the washer was used once a week up until 2005, and has not been used except for once since. It was then that I discovered the leaky pump. The washer is a Filter-Flo, two speed with the mini-basket option. They have all the receipts and everything, but I was just curious if it was absurd to save these to use some day. Thanks! John

Fix the filter-flo

I had that exact same machine. I also purchased it new in 1991. I made the mistake of switching to a Kenmore DD when I moved. Big mistake. Keep the filter-flo, get it fixed. You will definitely not find anything comparable in quality today, with the exception of Speed Queen. Best of luck to you.

i purchased my ge filter flo set from craigslist, they are from the early 80s i use them as my regular machine, had them for a year now and i was 3 loads every other day, and heavy blankets once a month, and i have had NO trouble, GE machines are built very well at least the filter flos are, they will last a long time.

Fix the FF and keep it.

They don't make them like they used to .
My mother had a GE Filter Flo/Despense All washer that she bought new in 1975. That machine was used through grandkids living with her etc, doing up to ten loads of laundry a day.

In 1993 when we bought our mobile home we decided to get rid of the GEs because they were getting up there in age, and the MH had a two year old set of Whirlpools. So we sold the pair to a friend of ours who was recently divorced and starting over. Within two years our friend had remarried, and the Whirlpools went tits up and died in a pool of water. The GE pair continued to wash along.

We talked to those friends last Christmas and he was getting his wife a new set of Kenmores for Christmas. There wasn't anything wrong with the FF, but she was wanting something larger.

The old GE machines could not be beat, the only repair Mom ever had was when a baby sock went over the basket and got sucked into the pump. Our friends said he had to jimmy the cable suspension a few years ago becaue the bracket rusted through. They just don't make them like that anymore.

Bought part today

I want to thank everyone for their input. I took the plunge and bought the pump for $10.80 on eBay, so I will be fixing the Filter-Flo soon. Thanks again, John

....I really miss my Filter Flo....they're a great machine and I'm glad you're saving them both....they should serve you for many years.

I have the identical dryer, in harvest gold. It uses a lot of gas (30,000 BTU's), but it's a great dryer. FF's are a lot of fun and work very well, just a bit hungry on energy. Keepers!

My previous apartment came with a late 80s/early 90s Filter Flo set and I miss them dearly....so much better than my current house's Roper. Yeah, it washes and at least it doesn't have a Cruel Action agitator, but I get tired of having to constantly remember to force it into a spin drain and not into a crappy neutral drain and I'm always looking for signs of wear on my clothes from its fast/short agitation stroke.
