this is a one speed machine, so the cautions of shifting while running, which you can do by the way, don't apply.....

first....lets by-pass that lid switch.....pop the top, about 8 inches in from each side insert a screwdriver, and the top will lift, the filterflo flume might get in the way as attached to the splash shield....just take note of it, and put back once the top is lowered and snapped back down....

a simple twist tie or cable tie will wrap around and hold that in place, now it will work with the lid open....

while the top is up, you may want to alter the fill flume a bit, to allow more water to spray on the clothing rather than behind the tub.....

sometimes we trim it, or it can be flipped over on itself....

for a faster fill.....we also pull the restrictor out of the water valve...

also as Ken mentioned, I have used a Dremel Tool to trim the clover of the pressure switch to get a better variable of the three water levels...most times you will only find a 2 inch difference between each level...

That's the exact washer my mother got when her first Maytag died.  But the GE died too...trans went out and daddy told her to go get another new Maytag.

Hey thanks for all the advice. Yeah I usually bypass all the lid switches on my machines. And I do have a couple dogs. I remember when I was a kid my mom had a washer like this. I remember the lump of lint that always gathered in the filter. I loved to stand and watch it wash. Sorry I'm late with the model numbers for the machines. I just recently upgraded to a new 4wheeler and me and all the guys hit the trails yesterday. Completely forgot about getting the model numbers for them. The dryer model number is DDE5300GBLWH. And the serial number is GZ262381G. The washer model number is 85600GALWH. And the serial number is 657026.

WHAT?...no pics of the new ride?

Well the dryer comes up as April 1976 or 1988....I would have thought closer to 1981 as I had that set, but I have a brochure from 1985, and that panel matches exactly to the ones in the book....

the washer should be along the lines of WWA5600G series....the serial number is not coming up as one that belongs to that machine.....seems like too few numbers...
