GE Harmony to get a window, heater

GE has announced that its top-loading Harmony washer will be getting a see-through lid and internal water heater. Yay! It's been many years since the US has had a top loader with a window and this one has a fast spin to watch too! (No need for magnets to trip the safety switch anymore.)This new version is also bilingual.

GE goes on to make the claim that GE washers are the most dependable. (!) Be it true that "the dependable people" with the (once) lonely repairman have gone down the sewer in recent years and Consumer Reports has improved GE's frequency of repair rating the last few years, that claim may still be a stretch! But at least we have a window.

I was wondering about the heating element. Since there is much more water in the Harmony than in a frontloader I wonder how big that element is. It can't be very big if it's a 110V one. And if it isn't big, what can it do on that amount of water. I like the idea of a window!

Probably about the only thing a heating element can do is maintain temperatures. Otherwise it would mean LONG cycle times, which may not be an issue if you do your hot water washing last.

The article states that you can stuff 24 towels into the washer. This would be quite heavy. Couldn't that wreck the thing? Unless they're talking dish towels! But bath towels?

Jerry, the Harmony is intended to comete with the likes of the Kenmore HE4T, Duet HT, and the LG--all front loaders. Robert has found his Harmony to be somewhat rough on items washed. Remember there is no agitator, just a large disc type thing at the bottom.

Good For GE!

I love the new see through lid! It looks like it’s the same design as my machine so I should be able to order it. I couldn't be more thrilled that GE has decided to put a window in a top loader! I have to wonder what made them decided to do that. I wonder if they have been reading our posts here and at the Appliance Forum. I would think some of our comments would be help spur the imagination of the designers and engineers.

The last window made in a top loader was probably the first WCI design after buying Frigidaire in the early 80's.

Window lids are cool!

Westinghouse in Australia are selling top loaders with window lids! They are great looking machines style wise, with a nice blue control panel.

who manufactures Westinghouse in Australia? Is it Electrolux? The washers are very interesting. Funny, the dryers don't match either the top load or front load washers.

Electrolux now owns all Australian appliance manufacturing. ALl the smaller brands that used to be stand alone, then part of two groups that got bought out by the other, Email, who sold the business to Electrolux. They do seem to be doing some nice appliances though, the Westinghouse and Electrolux/Kelvinator refrigerators are very nice indeed, The Westinghouses having two strips of blue lights inside its TOL fridges!

The FL's are imported, the 6.5kg sourced from Electrolux, obviously to phase out the rebadged LG FL's. (Electrolux seems to be phasing in its own product as previous agreements expire)

The Dryers are made in Australia and subsequently dont match the FL's, the control panels on the dryer do match the TL washer, but matching pairs are indeed a rarity in Australia, common practice is to mount the dryer on the wall above the washer. Its used strictly when nessacary (rain), but dryer use is becoming more common as more people live in homeunits.

Electrolux appears bo be own branding or double branding a range of products, an affordable Simpson line and a more upscale Westinghouse line. The Westinghouse TL's are Simpson machines but more TOL.

Server sluggishness can cause multiple postings, if the post did "take" but the page doesn't refresh after and you don't realize that and post again. For those who run into the problem often, a workaround is to copy your post text before hitting Submit. If it goes wonky, then go back and to the original thread, or to the topic area if you are posting a new thread, refresh is there to see if your addition does appear. If not, bring up the posting screen again and paste in your previously-copied text.

Using a browser that supports a tabbed interface, such as Mozilla Firefox or Opera, faciliates opening multiple views for easily checking if a post was successful.

Thanks Glenn, I couldn't agree more. I've been thinking about adding a routine to my "create post" program that will save a copy of the 1st paragraph text of the very last post into a data-file. The next time someone goes to add their post, the system will open this data-file and compare the 1st paragraph of the new post with the 1st paragraph of the very last post, if they match I will have the system display a message that the post has already be saved. This should prevent not all, but 90% of the duplicate posts. Of course if two people want to respond with the exact same words in a post within a few minutes of each other, they wont be able to, but that should be very rare. The only problem with this is at first the new code might be buggy and there is a chance of someone losing a post. I think the thing for everyone to remember is once you hit post, please wait until the server responds, sometimes it could take up to 30 seconds or so, even though you post was written properly in the first second or two after you click on the button.

I wrote to GE inquiring about the new Model of the Harmony Washer coming out with a Window and Water Heater. They replied right away with the following;

There is going to be a redesigned new Harmony
Washer coming out soon, but we do not have an exact release date on it as of yet.

*It will have a new HydroView (TM) tempered glass Lid
*Internal Hot Water Heater
*Be able to talk to the matching dryer in English or Spanish

The new model number will be: WPGT9360 (current version is the WPGT9350)
