We had this agitator in our washer growing up. Some like it better than the spiral-ramp style but it tended to be ineffective if even slightly overloaded.

That I like that agitator better than the spiral. I have that machine and tried both. The spiral moved them around, the straight vane had turn over. My two cents worth.

I think you have the two confused! The straight vane makes a lot of splashing, and the clothes move back and forth, but the ramped agitator rolls the clothes around and around. For ever 5 or so oscillations, the entire load is turned over once. The straight vane (from what I've personally experienced) is a lame duck in these machines. Lots of splashing, but little washing.

The ramped spiral activator(that GE went back to later on) is hands down better than either the straight8(worst of all) or the straight4. I once sawed off the upper vanes on my parents straight4 and improved the performance of their Filter-flo, very much like the one in Philly. After thinking about this for years, I realized that GE went to the Straight activator design in the mid sixties to improve performance of the mini-basket. It was a mistake that took them about 15 years to correct.

Great comparison video. Watching the Ramped Activator was like watching the Easy Spiralators in high gear.
So what year exactly did the Filter Flos go back to the spiral agitator?

Don, I always thought the FF Straight-Vanes introduced in the (Mid?)60's were pretty lame. I was surprised when I saw the last of their Straight-Vane variety in operation and it does provide good roll-over.
My personal preference will always be the spiral.
I've had a lot of fun lately with a Hotpoint "Filter-Ring" and it has the spiral agitator. That sound it makes is classic GE.

In testing, GE rarely got above an "average" rating for washing no matter what Activator was in the machine.
