Didn’t really need this but I seen this beautiful GE Microwave at GoodWill, in quite good condition none the less for 10 dollars and decided I couldn’t pass it up. The thing is a tank, about needed a crane to pick it up but it seems to work great! Now if I could have my Potscrubber dishwasher back out to Match it!

We had that same microwave in the rather posh rental home we lived in near Los Gatos before we bought our own place, which we knew would be a relative dump.  The kitchen had been redone with all GE equipment in the '80s, oak cabinetry, and a dropped ceiling with an oak grid to hold the textured diffuser panels for the fluorescent tubes above it.  Most of those panels came crashing down when Loma Prieta happened on 10/17/89.  We rigged up strings of holiday mini lights stapled to the ceiling and put them on a dimmer, which provided a  pleasing alternative.

The kitchens in those early 1960s tract homes were outfitted with GE originally, and there are still a few of them left.  They're easy to spot on craigslist and other on-line classifieds sites.

First GE countertop microwave ovens

This was the first design microwave ovens that GE built and sold. They had countertop ovens before this, but they were made in Japan by another company.

These were good rugged microwaves. I recently picked up a fancy one with the mechanical timer probe and power control buttons for the museum microwave collection

They were fairly reliable microwaves. The only downside to these is no turntable and they only rip 650 W cooking power most microwaves at that time.

early GE countertop.

I saw one of those about 1980-owner said it was a wedding gift from 1970. I am pretty sure these were made by Toshiba-GE and Toshiba worked with each other back in the deep past.

Three vintage countertop microwave ovens

Here’s a similar GE countertop microwave from March 1977. There’s also the original countertop microwave oven from GE that was made in Japan for them. Not sure who made it, it still had the old type of round magnetron tube when I found it years ago it had a bad magnetron I put in a replacement. It works fine

Two weeks ago I picked up this vintage tap and built Montgomery Ward microwave oven. It still works fine.
