I've only seen pictures of these. They look pretty cool. So is the compressor AND condenser on top? Or only the compressor? A neat system, although it's probably top heavy. Apparently there are lots of these running still. Anyone here have one or seen one? I posted below about a 50s Crosley at my work. Old fridges are so simple and reliable.

There's a monitor top fridge up at the local appliance shop in my neighborhood...still works, They keep it running everyday and the employees use it to store bag lunches in it. It sits right on the sales floor so everyone can see it!

The monitor top refrigerator was actually designed so that the refrigeration module could be removed for repair or replacement easily. That neat looking thing on top contains the compressor, with the condenser surrounding it. Attached to the bottom of the compressor, on the inside of the fridge compartment is the evaporator core that sort of acts like a small freezer compartment.

That's so cool, not many fridges these days put the working parts on top for all to see. Just can't imagine life without a fridge.

Kurt, I have a GE monitor top. You wouldn't believe how heavy the entire refrigerator is. The entire cabinet has a porcelain(correct spelling?) finish then the top is a cast iron plate that curves down over the top edge of the cabinet. The compressor and coil on top of the plate and the freezer coil on the bottom of the plate. They were designed so that you keep the cabinet forever and if the refrigeration unit gives out you could simply set a new one on top. Also the repair person could lift the top off(with the help of another good strong person) and take it in for repairs. I can load and move a modern refrigerator by myself. It took three good strong men to load mine into my truck. Mine is a single door. I would love to have the side by side two door model. I cant imagine how heavy it would be!
