GE or Speedqueen?

I'm rather new to the world of washing machine wisdom, so I was wondering if you guys could answer a question I have just out of curiosity. I know ya'll talk about Speedqueen quite a bit so I have done a little bit of googling on those. Then I saw this GE washer on ebay, and it looks just like some of the speedqueens to me. What is the difference?

What's the difference?  It's all pure GE current dayt crap.  I odn't think I"ve seen the shell around the console like that befre.  It really kind of looks like a Speed Queen, but it isn't.  that's a pure GE timer dial too.  RUN AWAY!!!!!!

never seen anything like that-does not look at all like my hydrowave or other GE washers i have seen,does look kinda speed queen-ish and the GE emblem is clearly visable...

To me it looks more like an Amana than a GE.

I KNOW THE ANSWER!!!!! This machine is a Raytheon built machine with the GE logo, and font style available ONLY at Sears Roebuck and Co. around 1999 or so. Why I don't know, but they were the only model like this, and they were only availbale for a short time at Sears.

I looked at this and thought, "Whoa, that's one hell of a hack." .. It looks like the offspring of a GE and a SQ washer...

This is the strangest combination I've seen in a while.

Actually, that was more 2000 - 2001 and was built for GE by Amana which was then owned by Goodman Industries after Raytheon sold off the Amana division. Apparently there was a brief GE strike and they sourced some machines from Amana. This was also just before Maytag acquired Amana. That looks exactly like my 2000 Amana "perfect balance" washer that lasted all of two years before the main tub seal leak began. Run, do not walk away from that machine. Nothing but trouble.

Amana Built GE TL Washer

This was a new one on me also but is diffidently an Amana built washer. I went out on a service call about 6 years ago on a GE top freezer refrigerator only be be surprised that it was a POS Admiral built frig.

 

GE has always been ruthless with workers and doesn't care much of consumers either when they do this just to keep the appliances flowing. In this case of either getting an Amana TL or GE TL washer it would be a coin toss to see which one developed a serious problem first, LOL.

That machine was awful! Second to the evil "SAV" it actually made a real GE look like a caddy.

Knock wood, but I have an Amanatag SAV4655 that has been doing an average of 10 loads a week for better than 7 years.

But if you compare the so-called "infamous" Amana NAV and Maytag SAV models against the current Speed Queens, there's really not that much difference.

Different outer tub (assuming one believes that a porcelain-coated steel outer tub is vastly superior to plastic - millions of Whirlpool machines would tend to prove that untrue), maybe a different inner tub (the TOL Amanatag had a stainless steel tub, mine is plastic), a different agitator, a different pump mounting scheme (clips vs. Torx screws) and a different tub seal. But Amanatag improved the tub seal toward the end of the production run, so there's not really that much obvious difference.

While I think the current Speed Queens are very good machines*, they lack features compared to my Amanatag, like automatic temperature control for the cold and warm settings (yet hot is tap-hot on the Amanatag), and a 3-speed motor.

*When my Amanatag finally develops the groan of death and spits grease around the inside of the cabinet, I'll replace it with a Speed Queen.

I guess depending on the tub seal design, the "GE Queen" could be a good buy for someone.

At least it would be easier to move than those old GE Filter-Flo's that had a big lump of concrete in the bottom. I used to help out a friend with a local moving business, and I'd curse those GEs every time I saw them because they weighed so much.

But I'd probably look for a DD Whirlpool in my local area if I needed a washer and my wallet wasn't full of greenbacks.

You said in your own post what happen to the SAV models? It was the plastic outer tub. Amanas hub and seal kit was not designed to work with a plastic outer tub. And for any one who is about to say that amana had a plastic outer tub before maytag,? Well yes they did. The tub was make of a different and more rigid plastic. Maytag took a bad situation and made it worse in reference to that tub seal.

Good to know about the weakness of the outer tub, thanks for the info.

I'm still kind of PO'd that when I bought the Amanatag I was told I was buying a Maytag, and I thought that meant a real Maytag. Yeah, it had Maytag on the front panel, but...on the other hand I didn't know the difference, so shame on me. The price difference between the Amanatag pair and the DD Whirlpools I was used to was maybe $40.

well i listen to the radio every saturday morning and there is a guy named Joe Gannon waam1600 every sat morning. He says that Speed Queen is the best! GE sucks!
