Hey Fellas, Does anyone know about the relability of the 70's GE Portable Dishwashers from the 70s? There is an avacado one at the local restore (that I just found today!!!) I took some pictures with my cell, but I need to get home to transfer them over to the computer, to post on here. Thanks Fellas!

Ours was quite reliable. It ran for years and years with no repairs. I finally replaced it because the racks rusted. My newer one has not been so reliable. Keep in mind it already has 30 years of use on it though!

"70's GE Portable Dishwashers from the 70s"

wow! I need to learn not to type on here when I am so exhausted... haven't forgotten about these pics... (other computer is in use). The unit looks to be in great shape, inside and out... the 70's are a little later than I'd like, I'd love a 60's or 50's model (in something that isn't avacado). It would serve the purpose (I NEED a dishwasher), but I can't bring myself to destroy the origional 50's cabnets to put in one that wouldn't match my slowly retro-ing kitchen.

GE portable dishwasher...

.....I say go for it. My mom bought one in 1973. We had a worn out Hotpoint ElectricSink and couldn't afford a kitchen tear out at the time. A couple of years later, we had the portable built in. Used it until 1990, when I replaced it with a GE 900 with a multi-orbit lower wash arm after the house became mine.....GE made and still makes good diswashers in my opinion.
And don't you dare take out those 50's cabinets!!!!!!! I had a whole kitchen tear out in '97 and took my white metal cabinets to the basement and had the "old" kitchen installed down there, except for the dishwasher.

Tub Liner:

I've had two of these- both had tub liner issues, particularly at the bottom of the door, and the front bottom edge of the tub. The "Perma-Tuf" material GE used back then wasn't quite as great as GE liked to think it was, evidently.

I'd check carefully for rust bubbles before plunking down any money. My experience is that once this starts, it's only going to get worse. If you don't see any problems, go for it- mine were otherwise reliable.
