Hi,

When I purchased my home it came with what I consider a beautiful stove. The wife hates it haha. Anyway yesterday it stopped working correctly. The stove will not heat above 275 (thermometer) and the broil will not broil! I'm guessing it's the temp sensor but don't know. I searched the internet and found this forum.

So a couple of questions. What year is mine made?
Any idea if parts are universal? where to get them?

The sensi-temp has never really seemed to work correctly (not getting super hot) takes a while to boil things.

Also the back right dual element Calrod was junk and the replacement I bought gets too hot and warps any idea on replacements?

Thanks I know I just threw a lot out there.

Randy

PS the elements inside the oven look fine.

GE Range

Manufactured March 1968. The problem with the Sensi-temp is probably the sensor in the center of the burner. The part # is WB21X5207. It hasn't been made in many years. You'll have to find one either on ebay or someone here might have a good used one. I got one on ebay earlier this year. They're expensive due to no longer being made. You'll see them listed for over $200.00. Keep watching for one at a reasonable price. You can follow a search and ebay will send an email when a new one is listed.

Another repair that was often done when the sensor went bad was to replace the responder (part the knob attaches to) located inside the control panel with an infinite control making the burner operate like other models that used a rotary switch/knob to set temp rather than the push button switch with set temps. The burner will still function on selections 4" 6" 8" and grill. Temps as shown on the knob are no longer held by the sensor/responder. The temps on the knob are then just a guide for lower or higher heat. That repair had been done to mine in the past. The infinite switch is available. Even though mine still works I got another one on ebay. The part # is 5500-202.

Does the rear burner get super hot regardless of what temp you select on the switch? Someone else here would know the answer to this but would attaching the wires incorrectly cause the element to always overheat? If the wires are attached correctly sounds like the switch.

Could the problem with the oven and no broil be a fuse? I guess the oven problem could be the thermostat but the fact the broil element stopped working at the same time makes me think something else is going on. I seem to remember someone here a while back having a similar problem with a GE range. I remember him asking specific questions concerning some of the wiring or component at the back. You could probably find some info related to your questions using the Super Searchalator located in the upper right corner.

BTW...I picked up a 67 a year ago. It needed a thorough cleaning. Here's the link to that thread if you want to take a look.

I have the wiring diagram if you'd like a copy. It would be somewhat different from yours as mine is not self-cleaning. The wiring diagram is probably still in place on yours in an envelope glued to the inside of one of the back panel covers. The center one if I remember correctly.

thank you

The broil seems to produce heat just not full broil. The broil on mine has always been temp adjustable. I learned this the hard way by forgetting to turn the temp to broil.

thanks for the info.

I re-wired the rear burner the same as the original. Ill have to check into this. Ill also have to try the lower temps and see. Didn't really think about the switch being bad.

The sensi-temp hard to replace? I think I saw a couple on ebay or amazon.

Thanks again

Randy
