We finally received our new GE refrigerator!
This thing is huge! It really dominates the kitchen with it's size. But it is nice to have all matching appliances again (SS).

The things we like about it:

The size! We'll probably never use any of the door shelves. You could cater a party for 12 and still have left over room in it.

It's quiet. I mean REALLY quiet. You can't tell if it is running or not even when standing next to it.

It has these sliding shelves. If you need vertical space you just slide the shelves backwards and the reduce to 1/2 their original size. You could store a vase with flowers in it that stands 4 ft tall standing up and still have room left over.

The last refrigerator we had, that wretched Whirlpool took 24 hours to cool down after we installed it. This one cooled down to 0 in freezer and 36F in the fridge in about 4 hours.

The dislikes:
When you use the ice dispenser in the door, it is LOUD! I mean you wouldn't dare use it if anyone in the house has gone to bed. It would wake them up.

For some reason the ice cubes are opaque white. The Whirlpool had translucent ice, but this one makes pure white ice and the shape looks like a turd. Literally.
Most machine ice I have seen has pretty angular edges and the cube shape is well defined. In this one the cubes are long and rounded.

I don't know what to think of the blueish LED lighting. Especially around the ice/water dispenser. At night when it's the only light on in the room it makes the already imposing size of the thing look alien. Very strange.

Any idea why the ice comes out white?

As far as the ice did you run like a gallon of water out of the water dispenser? I know when I change the water filter on the whole house filter or the refrig filter you have to run water for awhile through them to saturate the filter. The water will come out looking like white for awhile till it removes all the air. The white is not harmful its just small air particules in the water that has frozen. This should "clear up" in a couple of days, or you can drain about a gallon out of the dispenser.

GE

Check online and see if your fridge has the WR55X10942 board. If so, look around for a good deal and see about having a spare on hand. These boards fail ALL THE TIME. GE builds an okay fridge, but their electronics are as unreliable as LG. I work in an appliance parts store and we keep over a hundred of those boards on hand because we sell so many.

Enjoy your new fridge,
Dave

I ran about three standard size bucket fulls of water through it and dumped two bins of ice. Btw the water is filtered twice. Once through the whole house filter and again with the GE filter in the refrigerator.

Thanks for the warning on the circuit board. What happens when it fails? Does the unit just shut down and defrost? We normally don't do such things, but we did get the extended warranty(three years).

Glad you like the GE.  They are impressive looking.  As far as the ice we get it every time we change our filter on our Whirlpool even running water through like you did.

I forgot about the ice turds!!

We have friends that have this.  They are nice thought and don't stick to the edges of a glass like the cresents do.

Congratulations Allen.

I like your description of the sliding shelves. My Frigidaire has several shelves that adjust up or down with a crank, but nothing that would allow a single tall item, like a vase of flowers, to be stored, short of removing an entire shelf. Sounds very practical.

My understanding re: newly installed built in water filters (whether on a new fridge or when you change out the filter) is that you are supposed to run a gallon of water through the dispenser to remove carbon and bubbles from the filter. I usually do this with a quart sized decanter (four times) and the water doesn't look clear until the third or fourth pass with the decanter.

A good source for filters is www.filtersfast.com. Amazon also now carries some filters. I have friends with a three year old Samsung who had never changed the filter, when you tried to get water from the door the flow was quite slow. As a gag gift ("um, it's time to change the damn filter, y'know..."), I got them a pair of filters from FiltersFast.com. The latter site has discounted shipping if your order exceeds a certain amount, so I tend to buy from the latter, like three at a time for slightly over $100 and free or minimal shipping. Since I change out the filter once a year, that order lasts me three years.

We went on our replacement grocery shopping trip yesterday to buy all the food that was tossed when the Whirlpool died. We spent about $150 at the grocery store. When we brought it all home and put everything in the refrigerator, it still looked empty!

BTW, the shelves in the door are great, even though we don't have anything in them.
Each shelf can fit four gallon sized milk containers and there are 4 of them! And in the freezer a standard large pizza box lays flat on the shelf. Amazing. I think this refrigerator could easily support a family of 10. But it didn't look so big in the store on the sales floor. At least it's energy efficient.
