Nice Machine!

I remember seeing that posted before. What a Great looking machine. Just how bad is the Tub? Some autobody shops can be pretty "crafty" If you find the right one. I do hope you get it fixed though in the meantime it sure is nice to look at!

Re: FYI:

Hi! "SHERRYS55CADDY" just to let you know, in case you didn't already. Please don't use all "CAPS" when you are writing, because it represents that you are "SHOUTING" at people.

"BTW" that is a real great looking GE Washer. I agree with Tim "timonator" about seeing if you can locate an Auto Paint Shop that will Re-Porceleain the Tub for you and in hopes that they will do it for a reasonable Price. Good Luck, please keep us Posted about your progress and findings out.

Peace and Great Laundrying with a Vintage GE Washer, Steve

How bad is the damage?

I have seen pin holes develop in tubs before, and I had some success with an epoxy that dries into a cement-like shield. Its not a perfect solution or an elegant one, but it has worked for me in the past.

If your tub doesn't have gaping holes in it, you may want to try it, perhaps temporarily until you find a better tub. You mix together equal parts of two soft compounds that alone are like clay. When the two are mixed they react, become slightly warm to the touch, and blend together easily. You can spread the mixture like molding clay.

Clean the area around the hole thorougly to remove any detergent residue. Press the epoxy into the hole and a large area surrounding it. Press the edges until they're flat. Overnight, the epoxy dries into an impervious shield. If you made a good enough seal over the hole, it will usually be fixed. My own solution to add some security to this was to then put 3M sealant over the entire patch, to make a second cover over the hole.

On Kenmores, the tub gets moved a lot. Since yours, at least I think, is stationary, you should have a better shot that this repair will work, at least for a while as you search for something better.

It's been a while since I bought this, but the epoxy was available at appliance parts stores in a red box the size of a toothpaste package.

Thanks for all the replys..The epoxy might be a good fix! Thanks!
The tub is pretty far gone but I an going to see if an autobody shop maybe able to fix it. My neighbor just so happens to be a welder and I am going to take it over there this afternoon 2 see if he might be able to repair.. I tryed to fill the tub with water and it just dumped out... : (
Thanks!!!

Hi Sherry, thats a great looking washer. Mike in Long Beach emailed you a couple of times about it and washer talk in general. Its a shame you never responded to him, since he had extra parts for these models......

Parts machine

Hi,

That is a fabulous washer, in the same color that my parents had. My V12 is white and has a different scheme on the control panel (black background, white lettering). I lucked out. My outer tub is mint, the nicest of all my machines. GE's are famous for their biggest weakness of outer tub rust-out issues. I had a parts machine that I stripped out for spare parts a while back but it was sitting in the yard and with spring almost here, I chucked the cabinet including the outer tub when my neighbor offered space in a rented dumping bin he got for some remodel tear down work.

I am going to go out on a limb here. I have generously offered to assist the owner of this machine and invited her to two different wash-in events. I know this type of communication can lead to garbled intentions, but I have to say that after providing a phone number and personal email, all I received was a brief sentence of acknowledgement to my initial email, no response what so ever to the invites. At the wash-ins, there were opportunities to to not only see a working V12, but meet others in the hobby to connect with. For this, or any hobby to survive, one must make the effort to connect with people and put some energy, effort and enthusiasm into the hobby. Robert provides this site on his dime so folks all over the world can carry on discussions and on a local level, even meet and spend some quality time together at a wash-in or assisting in fixing a washer or dryer. This only happens when folks take time to participate at a higher level than an occassional post when they need a part or repair info.

Wow Sherry what a real beauty! My favorite color and style! I am amazed at the machines you all come up with.

What would Miss Manners do?

Hi Mike, I have been in your shoes and I too find it strange when I contact someone through the phone or email and it goes unanswered. I have learned that my communication style works for me and cannot assume that others will adhere to what I consider just good manners. I wouldn't loose any sleep over this, you did what was right for you by issuing the invitations to further the connection. After that it is out of your hands. Happy Washing in Sunny CA!

Thanks Don

Hi Don,

Good to hear from you. Thanks for the kind words. I agree, that the best we can do is offer a kind gesture. It is up to the person on the receiving end to then accept or reject it.

Hope you did not get too much snow this weekend. Ohio looks very bad. It is top down weather here this weekend.

Mike

Miss Manners would have never uttered a word of discontent..

Have you checked under the machine to see if the tub is rusted, rubber tub boot has torn or come loose from it's clamps? Let us know what you find and we'll be glad to help you get this beauty back up and washing again. If you can photo the problem area, it will be easier to help you going forward.

rusty tub

This isn't my machine but I do recall seeing a picture posted of the interior. As I recall, the washtub in general had a light coat of rust all over as if it had sat full of water for a very long time. However, I believe they said that the tub is now unable to hold any water whatsoever so they haven't been able to test the machine. That would, of course, point to a broken boot or a hole in the outer tub.

The responses, I'm sure will benefit someone out there.

:-)

Miss Manners

Was a guy......

This is why so many members vent privately about this site. The core can be pretty rotted out, just like the outer tub on a GE.
